GP treating us like I am being a nusiance

Ok my DD has been very stufferly from being 2 weeks old. She is now over 5 months. When she started with this I went to my GP 3 times differnt antibotics, inhaler but nothing worked. Finnaly a phil in Doc refered us upto hospital. She has had tests done, x-rays, oxygen levels and im still awaiting ENT to put a camera down.

Any how last night her cough got much much worse and it was like she stoped breathing at 1 point as her breathing went very deep and very slow which was scarey.

So I went back to my GP this morning and he says she seems ok now just very snufferly. He could hear rattles on her chest but he said PROBABLY its from her nose.

He then went onto say he dosnt know why the peadactrics are running all these test as she is just stufferly. He made me feel like there was a big fuss about nothing. I think he was anoid that we had been refered.

Now why should I be made to feel like that. End of the day she is my DS and I know when some thing is wrong. I pay my national insurance why should my daugther be able to breath proper.

Sorry just needed a rant

how worrying for you. Were they helpful at the hospital? Did you feel they took it all more seriously?

heathermumof3 · 02/08/2010 14:17

Change doctors.

ZZZenAgain · 02/08/2010 14:18

ifthe hospital were concerned, it shows you are not wasting anyone's time. Hope you find the cause soon and something can be done about it.

sapphireblue · 02/08/2010 14:21

I'm thinking if it happens again maybe go to A&E rather than to your doctor. Either that or change GPs.

ZZZenAgain · 02/08/2010 14:25

you have 3 dc were you generally happy with this GP wrt your other dc's health problems?

I would e worried in your shoes, any mother would and I think others are right, if you can change GP it might make sense to find one who seems more sympathetic in particular if the hospital feel there is something wrong here beyond a blocked nose.

heathermumof3 · 02/08/2010 14:43

my other babies health are normal fine except the odd viral infection sickness any child gets.

The hospital don't know what it is yet but her oxygen levels are very low on her saturation test it was less than 95 for 9% of the time if that means anything to any one. her 24 PH study came back fine so it's not reflux. My peadatric has refered her to manchester going in Oct for a camrea down to check every thing is formed correctly. Im seeing a speech and language doctor for help with her feeding as she struggerls feeding due to her breathing and coughing.

What happend last night seemed differnt more scarey than normal. Her breathing was very heavy and very very slow. Not the normal very noisey snoring she does. Also her cough has got worse. When I told my GP this he said she has no temperature the noises from her chest are probably from her norse.

Im sorry I don't like probably normaly you can't hear anything on her chest so I don't like the idea of somthing being there but my doctor brushes it off.

I hope it doesn't turn out to be anything dramatic and that your GP is right in the end because it would be a relief to know it is nothing to worry about. I think you were right to take her in today and I don't think you have made a nuisance of yourself or that he was right to give you that impression.

Is there another local GP you could go to next time you have a concern like this if this happens before the hospital results bring any light into the matter?

Loie159 · 02/08/2010 14:52

trust your own instincts and change GP. They are there for advice and guideance and as a first port of call when you are ill. If you are made to feel like that then its just not helpfully and more worryingly there are other people who unlike you might not take their child to hosptial....If this happens again tonight can you go to A&E ? Where we live there is out of hours doctors which are situated by A&E but you have a sscheduled appointment (we went recently at midnight!)(so no waiting for hours in triage!) That way you could go and see a GP in urgent care and then if they need to do any more tests they just send you next door to A&E... but not sure if you have this set up where you live..... The number for out of hours dr's are normally given on a message on yournormal dr's number if you call and they are shut

Good luck

I think GP'sdon't see the kind of patients your DD is

they see average kids with average problems

go and see another gp from the same practice, but I guess by this morning her breathing changed so maybe he wasn't able to hear what you've heard yesterday

cestlavielife · 02/08/2010 15:31

ignore the GP.

what does the speech and lang person say? has she tried baby rice etc? does she get enough milk intake? does she throw up? is she constantly coughing?

is she fine otherwise eg physically on target?

does sleeping propped up help (rather than flat)?

have they shown you how to check for recession (chest going in as she struggles to breathe)
have they advised you on counting breaths, what is normal what is struggling? (cant remeber off hand, but there is a norm for breaths minute and is bad if is rapid breathing eg when my son used to get croup )

are you near an A&E/ could you take her in night when it happening?

if she really isnt breathing then dial 999 have paramedics come out.

keep calling to see if can get earlier referral for the scoping (camea) eg cancellation

trust your insitncts - she is being seen but if she having trouble breathing at night take to A&E or call 999.

are there allergies in family? asthma etc? do you have cats/dogs/carpets? tried humidifiers?

cough wont be related to temperature if is something else ie not related to viral or infection.

Colliecross · 02/08/2010 15:36

cestlavie is right. If you are really afraid in the night dial 999. Don't be afraid to bypass an unhelpful GP. Some are great but some don't really give a toss.

confuddledDOTcom · 02/08/2010 15:46

My eldest has bad asthma and the one phrase you've used that always got action is "she struggerls feeding due to her breathing and coughing" we were never sent home while that was still the case.

I know how you feel about the GP, even when it's real and they're good you can feel like you're bothering them, let alone when they brush you off.

Keep doing what you know is right and if things carry on make an appointment with the practice manager and/or change GP!

lucky1979 · 02/08/2010 18:12

If you're not happy then I would change GPs, it's so easily done that it's not worth dealing with someone you don't get on with.

Longtalljosie · 02/08/2010 18:19

Is she still sleeping in with you?
