AIBU to not want the bloody mormons to come round on a Sunday afternoon after I have just managed to get rid of FOUR kids and am having some me time (ok a sneeky glass of wine , peer through my front window (so seeing me!) and then ring my door bell and ask me "have you ever asked yourself the question "What is the purpose of life?" ohmyfuckinggod!!!!!

AIBU to think a) this is a massive intrusion and b) how on earth am I expected to answer that question?!

SugarPinkMouse You need an old fashioned washing up bottle (white one) which you can cut out a dog collar from. Our vicar used to show us the fairy logo on the inside of his!

My DH engages them in a semantic discussion of where the bible came from and asks them how they can believe in it completely when it was a an amalgamation of various centuries of works, translated, changed for political reasons by the catholic church...blah blah blah. He loves it and is always impressed by the ones who try really hard to convert him .

I, on the other hand am sat listening with the wine....

My mum is a JW (converted about 20yrs ago). 9 times out of 10 if you politely ask them not to call again they won't. The only exception is that they may call back a year or so later to see if there are new residents in the house.

Of course I can't comment on all JWs (I'm not by the way) but 99% of the ones I have met have been polite and respectful.

Their religion commands them to spread the word, so don't be too harsh on them!

SeaTrek · 02/08/2010 19:13

Yes, it is a massive intrusion. Occasionally, I must admit, I used find it quite fun. DH started shouting 'XXX - that's enough!' after a while though.

I now have no less than three signs up to deter cold calling, I have found any less that that simply doesn't work so it isn't a problem I have any longer. I do miss the JW/Mormons a little though, now they are gone...

That is my experience in RL cave. Very polite and respectful people. Its a different matter online where people feel free to say the most outrageous things in the name of their faith.

But to be fair that covers most things online.

"Their religion commands them to spread the word, so don't be too harsh on them!"

What their religion commands them to do is their problem, not anyone else's.

Heracles · 02/08/2010 23:48

You missed a trick; the answer to "the meaning of life" was sat right there waiting for you to drink it, silly.

If I don't want to answer the door I just don't. Simple, no?

sephrenia · 03/08/2010 00:06

A long time ago, I bought a box of books and in that box was a copy of the Satanic Bible.

Welll, I couldn't see it go to waste could I?

The very next weekend we got a JW at the door and I had a eureka moment. I told him that I would read his book if he read mine. He ran. It's worked on all but one occasion when a sweet old dear came up and rather than run, decided to have a philosophical discussion about the nature of religion.

I definitely learnt a lot from her!

I always ask them to explain Deuteronomy 25: 11-12. That always leaves them speechless when they look it up.

SomeGuy · 06/08/2010 23:11

I would have thought Mormons would care about Deuteronomy? Not part of the Book of Mormon, is it.
