In thinking that state school does not operate on a weekend..

... and therefore a child cannot possibly be excluded from school over the goddamn weekend?

As it happens, this temporary exclusion was illegal. So, I wrote to my Local Authority and asked them to investigate. The exclusion had been made without following the correct procedure and was for an unspecified period of time. I was a bit surprised then, when the LA replied with a letter that began with thanks for drawing their attention to the exclusion which was from the period of 7th-9th May 2010.

Errr... hold on.

7th May was a Friday. DD2 came home as usual after a normal day spent in the classroom with her peers, at a normal state school. She was bearing a letter asking me to meet the Head as there had been an altercation with another pupil. Upon learning this I called the school and was told not to send DD back to school until I'd had that meeting. So, this exclusion would have started from, um, about 4pm on a Friday.

And school ended at 3.20pm on that Friday.

Okaaaaayyyy...

And the exclusion ran, the LA reckons, until the 9th May 2010.

That'll be two days later then.

Until Sunday, to be precise.

I love my Local Education Authority. The words organise, piss-up and brewery often come to mind when I have to deal with them.

Definitely sounds odd to me...these fuckwits are responsible for overseeing your dcs education!

AdoraBelleDearhart · 31/07/2010 20:20

Vallhala, sounds like my DS's old LA, your not in oxfordshire are you?

Vallhala · 31/07/2010 20:23

Not Oxfordshire, Adora but somewhere equally reknowned for containing the elite of this country's academics.

Not that my LA *employs" any of them, clearly!

And lazarush, yes, it's scary isn't it?

I have of course asked the LA for the name of the particular fuckwit who has alleged that my child was excluded from 4pm Friday 7th til the end of Sunday 9th!

When I find out who it is, I'm going to send them a calander!

Spell check that calander word before you send the letter. They might see the funny side when they get it, you will probably brighten up their day.

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2010 20:44

i can see why you're annoyed about this, but aren't you bothered about the exclusion itself??

Vallhala · 31/07/2010 20:45

Whoops!

I must spell "calendar" correctly.

I must spell "calendar" correctly.

I must spell "calendar" correctly....

The stroppy letter has already been sent (thankfully without the use of the word "cala...cale...calan...", gah, that word!).

On a more serious note I was fucking livid that despite irrefutable evidence the LA didn't acknowledge that the exclusion was illegal and instead concentrated on trying to assure me that it did have a specific time scale.

I would be more concerned to be honest that my child had done something tha warranted an exclusion.

Vallhala · 31/07/2010 20:47

Stealth, I'm no longer bothered by the "exclusion" itself. For my part I have dealt with DD2 and discussed the matter at home, so you could say that that particular side is case closed now.

some state schools do though, state boarding schools, my "own" comp plays rugby etc at weekend, but agree with stealth, i thin k you are concentrating on the wrong issues here.

Vallhala · 31/07/2010 20:54

Just to explain:

  1. The "crime" wouldn't have warranted an exclusion - which is why, I think, DD2 was told just not to return to school until I'd met the head.

This is termed (by govt and legal bods and in govt guidelines) as an "unofficial exclusion" and is illegal.

  1. DD2 had only just started at the school, following a move. School was warned by me that she had been bullied in the previous one, and could well display challenging behaviour if she feels threatened or is in fear.

I also asked them to go over the previous school's notes as DD2 clearly has some SN issues, which I am still trying to get to the bottom of.

School told me not to worry, they wouldn't do anything wrt her past and it would all be fine, this was a clean slate. etc.

Then they wondered why DD2 got stroppy upon being bullied...

Why is it that parents of pupils that have been excluded fir whatever reason spend more time picking faults in their education authority than spending time looking at why their child was excluded in the first place!!!

This expectation of an education bloody astonishes me every time!!

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2010 20:56

OK, given your last post especially i can see why you're . Sounds like they don't have a clue how to deal with the issues she has
