"IF you chose to move on from breastfeeding...!"

IF???

OP posts:
Vallhala · 30/07/2010 00:20

Well, you could carry on until your DC is 18... I suppose!

nattiecake · 30/07/2010 00:37

lol, it grates on me EVERY TIME its on!! sooooooo irritating!!

OP posts:
melpomene · 30/07/2010 01:01

Well, an alternative approach is to let the baby/child, not the mother, decide when it's time to 'move on', I suppose.

Of course the reality is that they are trying to sound as if they are all supportive of bfing when they are actually in competition with it.

Lonnie · 30/07/2010 07:23

Funny thats the bit you focus on what about the fraud part about how wonderful Breastfeeding is but HEY our formula is just as good and wonderful and marvelous and you will be such a good mummy if you use it..

grrr that add makes my blood boil EVERY time I see it

YANBU

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/07/2010 07:30

I don't understand what's wrong with "if you move on". I'd be much more annoyed with "when you move on".

SloanyPony · 30/07/2010 09:46

I agree with tortoise. Some people do choose to move on. Formula is for those people. Therefore, if you choose to move on, Aptimil ads are aimed at you.

I agree, if it said "when" as if you are some kind of sicko for daring to BF past 6 months, I would be livid and my blood would boil.

Apart from pull their ad or replace it with one saying "we are evil marketers of satans urine" what exactly should they say?

Their bollox about "immunofortis" or whatever annoys me much more than this.

Putting their product into context whilst acknowledging that breastfeeding is best for your baby (as I think they do at the start dont they?) isn't too bad is it?

runnybottom · 30/07/2010 09:47

Whats wrong with it? It means if you choose to move on from bf to formula, use ours. Lots of us don't use formula at all, so it is an IF.

Find something else to angst over.

ChoChoSan · 30/07/2010 09:49

Is this the ad that says "Aptimil has nx more iron than cows' milk", as one of it's big selling points and then has tiny small print at the bottom of the screen saying:

*Cows' milk is not a good source of iron

pumperspumpkin · 30/07/2010 09:53

I think that's Cow and Gate but that makes me laugh too. That's the one isn't it with the child drinking a dustbin sized cup of milk instead of two small beakers of Growing Up Milk or whatever it's called?

MathsMadMummy · 30/07/2010 09:55

they're all bollocks.

and that laughing baby at the end of the Cow & Gate one looks like John Prescott

porcamiseria · 30/07/2010 10:20

oh FF slamming, yawn

as others say at least they ackowldge BF is "best"

better than cow and gate trying to flog their shite instead of good old 35p a pint cows milk. wankers!

SirBoobAlot · 30/07/2010 10:23

It annoys me because they're trying to say its as good as breast milk for children / babies. The "If" part doesn't bother me though.

usualsuspect · 30/07/2010 10:25

It doesn't annoy me

QueenofDreams · 30/07/2010 10:31

The cow and gate one days make me laugh - like any toddler relies SOLELY on milk for all nutritional needs? Such a stupid advert.

Look, by saying breast is best they are acknowledging that their product is inferior to that. Anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that.

I dont really see the problem with saying Cow & Gate is a better source of iron than cows milk (and that cows milk is a poor source of iron). If they'd compared it to cake and said cake was a poor source of iron, fair enough, but if you bear in mind that cows milk is the other alternative to follow on or growing up milk or whatever they call it, they are highlighting the fact that their product is nutritionally superior to cows milk, which in many ways it is. These products do get criticism for having more "sugars" than cows milk (I think) and the growing up one even has some vanilla in it, I think. But like it or not, they have long chain polyunsaturates, various vitamins in good quantities that are important for that age, and IRON.

Breast milk is nutritionally superior to formula milk. Formula milk is nutritionally superior to cows milk (which is not to say cows milk is a bad choice - it is fine for over 1's, but it is, technically, nutritionally inferior, because it has less nutrients!)

callalilies · 30/07/2010 11:39

What on earth's wrong with 'if you choose to move on from breastfeeding'? Who is that offending exactly?

PuzzleRocks · 30/07/2010 11:42

OP - Can you come back and clarify what annoys you? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

StealthPolarBear · 30/07/2010 11:45

I don't see what the OP means about if, but the "move on" implies developing, growing etc - i.e. a good thing. If they'd said "If you decide to stop breastfeeding..." it would have been more bf-friendly. But they are trying to sell the milk so I don't suppose they'd do that

FindingMyMojo · 30/07/2010 12:06

I don't mind the IF - I mean what else could they say? Clearly they couldn't use WHEN as they aren't allowed to promote FF over BF are they?

But what bugs me about this ad, if the little pulsing aura of 'protection' around the baby when it's breastfeeding and then later in the add when the girl sneezes on the FFeeding baby, the same aura pops up to protect the child from sneeze germs - bugs me to hell. It's trying to show that formula provides a shield of protection, just like BF does. I'm surprised they can get away with it. They initially appear to come across as pro-BF whilst saying our F will provide the same 'level of protection' for your child as breast milk.

Devious.

RunawayWife · 30/07/2010 12:10

Don't have a problem with it TBH.
Not everyone breast feeds, not everyone who does does it for months and months and months, formula exists I think people need to get over it

Dylanpsmummy · 30/07/2010 12:14

This one is not as annoying as the one that shows all the baby's laughing saying things like:

do I look like I have an upset tummy

do I look like I'm lacking vitamins and minerals

e.t.c basically all the arguments for breast feeding.

Can't rember which one it is though haven't seen it in a while.

callalilies · 30/07/2010 12:17

There are all sorts of things that formula companies do in terms of advertising that might be irritating, annoying, misleading or even offensive.

I just really struggle to see that putting 'if you choose to move on from breastfeeding' is one of them.
