Am fed up of there being loads of clothes for girls in EVERY shop and a tiny crappy selection for boys.

I think we should start a " let boys have clothes " campaign

Broderie · 28/07/2010 11:21

My friend is a childrenswear designer and she says boys clothes just don't sell aswell though, not big business like girls clothes, so i suppose that is why there is lack of choice

majafa · 28/07/2010 11:55

Im with slushy,
Ive got a 11 yr old who is as tall as me 5'4' so is in a 14 yr olds size, hes a nightmare to buy for and a 8 yr old who is9 yr old clothes.

I personally at this moment in time cannot afford the shops mentioned here, ie gap! M&S, Next, Boden etc even debenhams is bloomin expensive.
Primark is probley my limit at the moment and theres no t much in the way of choice there either, so what do people like myself do?

shockers · 28/07/2010 12:06

I have the opposite problem... I find non slutty girls clothes really difficult to find on the high street. I go for Boden and Joules, when they have sales on, for both DD and DS.

I love TK Maxx for DS but the girl's stuff isn't half as good.

Boy's clothes usually feel nicer too!

Greenshadow · 28/07/2010 19:28

11yo DS's favorite top is currently one from New Look.
Came 2nd-hand and obviously I havn't mentioned the fact that it is actually a ladies (size 8 - perfect fit)!
It's pale blue/denimy colour and he absolutely loves it.

jazzchickens · 28/07/2010 19:57

Buying for young teenage lads is terrible if they are not into sportswear like my two sons. We have a huge NEXT store in the City Centre but they don't stock the 11 - 16 range in the store - only online !! why oh why oh why?

Thankfully they are now both of a size that can get in young mens such as Top Man (although youngest is in xxs). Massive gap in the market I'd say. Boys are so much more into fashion now than they were when I was younger.

chasingrainbows · 28/07/2010 20:02

slushy - you have my full support.
my ds have really only got the sportswear option (im talking hoodie here) and that is sartorially not good!

Firawla · 28/07/2010 20:30

whoever mentioned minimode they are discontinuing it from this summer, quite a shame i like their stuff

HappyMummyOfOne · 28/07/2010 20:37

Debenhams do some lovely boys clothes as do Next (althogh Next stores have less for boys than girls but online is great).

slushy · 28/07/2010 21:53

I would love to start a campain and push for equal amounts of clothing for boys and girls but I would not have a clue how to?

shellio · 28/07/2010 23:19

Slushy count me in big time! Mumsnet HQ help us!! Or daily mail!!

ilovehens · 28/07/2010 23:38

My eldest son is in 13-14 year old stuff now and it's a nightmare. The clothes they do have are horrible and there's only ever a tiny selection.

misspollysdolly · 29/07/2010 00:11

Am totally with you. Boys geta really poor deal. It all either blue, brown or orange, striped or emplazoned with some ridiculous slogan or other about 'me being a boy and therefore all you can expect from me is mess and destruction'... I've often been annoyed about wondered why even branded clothes get so strictly placed in either girl's or boy's sections - for example my DS (5yo) really likes Charlie and Lola, but they only seem to appear on girls slippers/pjs/t-shirts, which in turn all have some daft girly cut, ruching, or embellishments. I think there should be a lot more 'unisex' clothing, especially for little girls and boys. In fact I often buy girl's clothes for my two boys - again, not with the daft girly extras - but just with regard to colours and design of tops. I have just got these for DS2 who is 2.5 years... maybe (my ex-brother in law would keel over and die if his son was ever seen in these!), but we like!

misspollysdolly · 29/07/2010 00:12

Sooooo many typos...but then it's pretty late!

(*emBlazoned - clearly I don't think this has a p in it...just for the record!!)

terryble · 29/07/2010 01:01

I agree. There is too much pink stuff for girls, and too little nice stuff for boys.

I found Additions' Ladybird* range good for boys stuff earlier this year, though.

Vertbaudet occasionally have nice things, and they send out money-off vouchers a lot, once you're on their mailing list.

*I know it was originally owned by Woolworths.

slushy · 29/07/2010 09:33

let boys have clothes campaign

I guess we will have to see how much support it will get and then try to get mumsnet to help out.

it won't go far as a campaign. There a re loads of clothes for boys.

bearcrumble · 29/07/2010 20:36

I have a weakness for Petit Bateau for my DS but I buy a lot of it secondhand on Ebay.

I also have had some stuff from Polarn O Pyret and Katvig.

The high street is 99% shit to be honest. I don't want things covered in sporty slogans or cars or bloody trains. Or dogs.

Someone gave me a H+M outfit with little trees and owls on - that's quite nice and I think I got a good plain pair of jeans from there too.

Zara is ok too - not much choice but what there is is good.

I am not a fan of a lot of the girls' high street stuff either though. I can't stand all the frills/applique/sequin overload.

usualsuspect · 29/07/2010 20:38

Its a sure sign there's a load of crap out there for boys when not one single pair of shorts is available in DS's size in the first 30 minutes of the Boden summer sale. They were all sold out months ago.

I found the ideal pair in Fat Face. They'd been released 3 weeks previously and I got my store to do an order as there were only 2 pairs left in the country, fgs.

I'm not talking mad shorts here, just below the knee, plain navy, a few pockets, hardwearing but not too hot, age 6. Not hard. Or so you'd think.

H and M and Zara do have some gems but boy (no pun intended ) you have to search through some crap.

I've also had some great stuff from Tu at Sainsbo's - but only the minute it comes out otherwise its gone - tops and flipflops this year.

majafa · 30/07/2010 08:30

Usualsuspect, yeah theres loads of boys clothes out there, if the boy is under 5, and if you have the money to spend in places like H&M Next Debenhams Boden etc etc

majafa · 30/07/2010 08:33

Broderie - is tht because Mums/parents dont like the stuff designed and sent to the shops?
A few have mentioned on here they dont like pirates skulls etc to name a few, just a thought for your friend.
