to not let my children bounce on their beds?

PigeonPie · 27/07/2010 21:25

I have the rule that my children are not allowed to bounce on their beds. Mainly because I don't want them falling off and damaging themselves and I don't want to have to buy new beds because they've broken their current ones.

Also, we have had toys broken because they were left on the bed and then not noticed and landed on, so I now have the rule, particularly when friends come, that they are not allowed to play on the bed either.

However, I really don't know whether I am being unreasonable in this. I just don't understand allowing children to wilfully destroy the place where they sleep.

So AIBU?

dd is 3 ad not allowed to bounce on her bed as its only a wooden slat bed and may break so YANBU.

hairytriangle · 27/07/2010 21:28

Chill out and let them bounce! Or get a trampoline.

secunda · 27/07/2010 21:29

YANBU I fell off my bed whilst bouncing and smashed my face on my bedside table when I was small

simpson · 27/07/2010 21:29

YANBU.

DS (5) is not allowed to bounce on his bed either which is also a wooden slatted bed.

He has a trampoline in the garden for bouncing on

Morloth · 27/07/2010 21:30

YANBU, no bouncing on beds here.

Sidge · 27/07/2010 21:31

My children aren't allowed to bounce on their beds and never have been.

I'm not buying new mattresses/beds every year - they've got a trampoline outside if they want to bounce.

PigeonPie · 27/07/2010 21:31

Both the beds are wooden slatted ones and we don't have room for a trampoline in the garden.

They can go to gym when they're bigger, like I did, if they want to do trampolining properly.

we used to have jumping on beds until my bed collapsed (under the weight of a smallish 5 year old i might add). Now my bed has a giant dip in the middle where the mattress is held up by the contents of the drawer underneath. Therefore we now have to no jumping on beds rule. YANBU.

PigeonPie · 27/07/2010 21:33

I don't understand letting them bounce and then destroying their beds. I just don't have money to spend renewing beds that regularly.

YANBU. Absolutely no bouncing on beds or sofa here. Dangerous and disrespectful to our property.

duplotogo · 27/07/2010 21:34

YANBU as the beds just can't take it

Bingtata · 27/07/2010 21:35

Your beds, your rules.

MajorPettigrew · 27/07/2010 21:36

YANBU - no bouncing on beds here either.

In fact, I don't allow playing with friends in bedroom. It's the playroom, lounge or garden.
(Think I'm quite mean )

PigeonPie · 27/07/2010 21:37

I just don't understand why others let them.

no bouncing on beds or sofa here either

have to admit tho in Spain this year when stuck due to volcanic ash and inside due to 8 hour thunderstorm and power cuts some friend we'd made came to our room for coffee and play and we let the kids play trampolines on the hotel beds

PigeonPie · 27/07/2010 21:49

mumbar that's different . They had to run off some energy somehow and probably couldn't have run round the hotel without causing a riot!

all the dcs have slatted beds and we've not got room for a trampoline. Me and dp have the only bouncy bed in the house- which was a bit of poor planning

I do let them bounce on it every now and then though because it's really fuuuuuuuuuun

Rockbird · 27/07/2010 21:55

I let dd bounce on our bed only. It's massive so less chance of falling off and it's a very very solid bed so the chances of a 2yo breaking it are slim.

She knows she's not allowed to bounce on any other bed because they're too small and she's good about that. She doesn't have a trampoline.

Mumcentreplus · 27/07/2010 21:57

Mine bounced against my will and the bed is friggin broken! YANBU!!!

Adair · 27/07/2010 21:58

Yup, the dc could jump on our bed (though now we have a new bed...), not on theirs (well, not jumping, they can play and clamber on them).

They are allowed to run amok all over the sofas though (old sofas, no intention of replacing til dc much older... )

gonewiththewind1973 · 27/07/2010 21:58

Nope - no bouncing here either.

Rosebud05 · 27/07/2010 21:59

I have a 'no bouncing standing up' rule. They (3.4 and 1.2) can bounce sitting down, which they soon get fed up with.

PigeonPie · 27/07/2010 22:00

I do know it's fun and, although it's a long time ago, I do remember it being fun. But I also enjoyed learning (supervised) trampolining.

I know I sound like a killjoy but they are wooden bed frames with slats and DS1 damaged himself a while ago bouncing and landing on the frame getting into it.

But for me it's about respect for your sleeping space too.

both my little girl 4 and little boy 18 months bounce on both their beds, my bed and the sofa. its my house my rules :D and both children know how to look after toys (although the little fella is a little rougher as he gets frustrated at times)

toccatanfudge · 27/07/2010 22:02

bouncing allowed here - but they tend not to since we've moved as they're at great risk of bumping their beds because of being a bottom bunk, a high top bunk and a mid-sleeper with a sloped ceiling above it

I did try (sort of) to stop them jumping on the sofa........but totally gave up on that one as I figured it was safer than trying to leap off the dining room table/chairs onto the floor...........
