AIBU to suggest that the volunteers should be taken from the live register, If you want your state benefits you have to, if medically and family constraints allow do so many volunteer hrs.

YABU.

You do realise there's an entire United Kingdom outside of London, including many on benefits?

Gah, this board is getting more and more full of ignoramuses every day.

Buzzybb · 27/07/2010 15:20

I am willing to be flamed here on this but I feel it is the perfect opportunity to give people a sense of self worth and a chance to network. I really believe the recession will not be gone by next year and that the live register will still be in the thousands.

agreed with expat

expatinscotland · 27/07/2010 15:22

Yawn.

The term 'jog on' comes to mind.

Buzzybb · 27/07/2010 15:23

Expat I meant in the area, and if young people esp are willing to travel then yes I feel they should be prioritised over all the non nationals who have been drafted in [including some of my extended family who should not get the chance over residents of the country]

Do you really want the UK represented by people who are FORCED to volunteer? Imagine the lovely welcome international visitors will receive from them.

Chil1234 · 27/07/2010 15:23

What is the live register? Is there a dead register?...

Chil1234 · 27/07/2010 15:24

I've volunteered already... am I live?

Buzzybb · 27/07/2010 15:25

I think I really came with the plan that after visiting the job centre with my younger cousin [deaf wanted an interpreter] when he asked was laughed at, I just believe they should be encouraged

Chil1234 · 27/07/2010 15:27

Who's 'they'?.... And do look up 'volunteer' in the dictionary.

JeMeSouviens · 27/07/2010 15:29

Yes encourage to volunteer, but not beaten with a stick to do so.

Perhaps direct your cousin here, the official route

Buzzybb · 27/07/2010 15:31

Live reg is those who are on the job centre list according to the lady we spoke.
I really thought that as well as encouraging people with courses/looking for work that local pride would be good and give people to expand their skills base or the chance to meet others to be less isolated. Not ever meaning that you Have to do it or lose benefits, sorry reread my op and it looked like it but I was mad after coming back from the job centre and the way they were treating people [obv a bad day for the lady we spoke with]

Volunteering is usually recommended to people as a path back to full-time employment. However 2012 is .... that's right... two years away and you'd like to think anyone on today's live list would be gainfully employed by then.

funkybuddah · 27/07/2010 15:38

Why shouldn't people work for their benefits (not those on sick) I have to work for my wages. I think that long term claimants should be used by local councils to do work a few hours a week in recipt of benefits, why not?

Firawla · 27/07/2010 15:38

what do you mean people who are working, or those on benefits job seekers allowance kind of thing? (not sure what live register is, whether its a benefits thing or electoral register?!)
if they are job seekers i dont see the harm in the idea, as long as they would be paid something for it, then they have something to put on their cv too?
if you mean people who are working and just live in london then why should they, they are busy
but dont force the people, just offer them the opertunity - some might love to do it

Buzzybb · 27/07/2010 15:48

Chill they volunteers will be picked by the end of the year/start of next year so really only 5 months left, yes hopefully they will be working but some may not why not encourage them to apply.
Volunteer means those working on behalf of others or a particular cause without payment for their time and services, nothing about them having to want to or liking it but it would help
Firwala yes I do mean people who are in benefit of job seekers [not forcing people who work in any capacity], my cousin is on JS has no skill base and little experience so to me it is ideal for him if a suitable position was available if he is still not working it is really a win win IMHO

um you do know what volunteering means don't you?!

It is a perfect opportunity for those who are able but sadly out of work to get some really good experiences if they choose to! But we dont want a bunch of sulky people doing it cos they have been made to, what nonesense!
