to be irritated with the Next baby section

I am having a little boy, and would love to go in there (or any other shop selling childrens clothes) and find lots of little boy clothes to get excited by.

However our local one is 90% girls clothes and 10% boys. To the degree that they even have areas labeled and dedicated to boys clothes filled with girls stuff.

I realise girls have more choice of clothing and boys generally have a top/bottom combo, but should that mean I am limited to the blue and brown crap they have on one measly stand?

YANBU, but get used to it, it's hard to dress a baby boy nicely as most shop buyers think we want to dress them as mini teenagers. I'm always astounded by how many different types of jeans Next have available in the boys section, as if you couldn't possibly want a pair of trousers that wasn't denim.

Try Mini Mode in larger branches of Boots. They often have nice cute, colourful stuff.

Loads of threads on this - people have complained before and been told "we just cater to the demand"

I have a boy too and I like the challenge of finding things for him to wear. I like clothes which are brightly coloured and don't say things like "naughty" or "monster" on.

There are much more bright clothes around in the summer ranges - I tend to overbuy things in different sizes like t-shirts which can be worn indoors in the winter, and stick to the plainer trousers. Asda are good for plain trousers for boys with cute little belts with pictures on e.g. farm animals or crocodiles are two we have. And you can use the belts with other trousers to brighten them up. They tend to be jeans though so maybe better for toddlers. Sainsbury's are great for sleepsuits and vests, but sometimes a bit heavy on the "monster" theme. I don't mind pictures of monsters so much it's when the t-shirt proclaims that the little boy wearing it is a monster that I don't like them.

Boots is good - but they are closing down, so go there now and buy all the sale stuff in larger sizes! H&M good as well. I don't notice ours having a particular difference in the amount of stuff for boys and girls, but there is a lot of unisex stuff which has purple etc in which may be mistaken for girls' stuff.

M&S is very hit and miss - usually it's either utter crap throughout, or lots of cute things, they have got some gorgeous things in for baby/toddler boys at the moment. I don't tend to go into Next any more as the nice items are few and far between. Debenhams and John Lewis are both good too - but Debenhams is expensive.

Overall ebay is the place I get most of DS' stuff. Just click on the search filters to the left and find the one about colour and tick them all except blue, brown, white and grey. I have found some lovely and unusual things that way.

Mini Mode is closing down I mean (clothes supplier in Boots) - not Boots themselves.

I find Next is one of the better ones. I agree Monsoon is really limited (and a bit square) and John Lewis online has hardly anything.

I buy way in advance though - when I find something nice, I have to resist buying the current size so I know ds will have something lovely in the wardrobe.

Gap's ok but the sizes are way too small and it confuses me. Love M&S cardigans, Boden Trousers and tees, Gap socks and Mothercare accessories.

My favourite t-shirt that ds wore sooo much was from Sainsbury's and had the lyrics of Zip-a-dee-do-dah on it. Wish I'd bought all sizes!

ERR, go elsewhere!!??

TheFruitWhisperer · 28/07/2010 11:31

porcamiseria, I can only guess you didnt read my subsequent posts saying I have been to a few other places and still found baby clothing in general to be mostly girl orientated.

Thanks for all the tips guys, I think I'll just have to keep my eyes open! Im still going to write to Next, too!!!
