To be contemplating a holiday?

I have debts but am managing the repayments. I don't really do holidays, haven't had one for 10 years or more (though do get weekends away at Morris events). But I know DS is longing to go and visit the Taunton Steam Railway, and apparently there are campsites nearby and I think we could manage a weekend...

What PlumBumMum said. Go for it.

How old is your DS? I ask because I live close to the said steam railway and DD who is 6 described it as 'the worstest thing I have ever done in my life'. It's bloody long if you go all the way to Minehead and after the novelty has worn off (about 20 mins in), you have to deal with a bored child for the rest of the way. Unless he is older and has a Nintendo DS for when the boredom sets in, or is particularly crazy about trains, I would suggest just doing one or two stops rather than the whole thing.

Could recommend some campsites if you do decide to go...

DS is nearly 6 and mad about trains. This is a child whose idea of a treat is to ride the length of the new London Overground and back. Last summer when we went to Wallingford Bunkfest his dad had to spend two whole days riding backwards and forwards on the vintage steam railway with him (at least £2 got them an all-day ticket...)

But I would be grateful for campsite recommendations - which ones are nearest to a) the railway and b) a decent pub?

www.quantock-orchard.co.uk/ This one is very close to the railway, nearest pub is 1.5 miles away and it does food. Right out in the sticks.

www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=4930 is nearer Taunton, about 10 mins drive to railway and has a pub within walking distance (The Merry Monk). It's basic with just a toilet/shower block, no shop or anything, but it's known to be pretty cheap to stay there. I have stayed there before and it's fine.

SGB go for it,
even if it is for 1 night your ds will love it and you will feel lifted, and you will face the winter with lovely memories

(thats what we are telling ourselves as a holiday will stretch us but we are going!)
