to keep a car roof box on the car

we're off on holiday in a few weeks and I've suggested getting a car roof box to fit in the huge amount of toddler and baby stuff.
The only sticking point is storing the box when we're not using it.
I've seen a really good one which says it causes no extra drag or fuel consumption, so I can't see what's wrong with keeping it on DH's car permanently.
His opinion is that he'd "look like a nob" having a roofbox on during the winter.
Opinions please.

Who comments on that kind of thing? "Get those silly people with a car roof box! Why, I bet they're not even going on holiday! " it's just not going to be an interesting critique in any circumstance so I wouldn't worry.

Do you know you can hire roof boxes OP?

Definitely don't leave it on all the time, as others have pointed out it's a pain in the neck for parking, quite apart from the fuel consumption issue.

OP probably doesn't have any toddler stuff any more Grin if you look at the date of this...

We keep ours on our car. We live in central London so we don't drive much, only to leave London when we use the roofbox. I can't believe there is much drag or additional petrol consumption from driving at a slow pace to the supermarket or whatever (on the rare occasions we do that). I don't have a garage and I have better things to have on my roof terrace than a hulking great roof box. Plus it is a pain to get on the car. Easier to leave it screwed in there!

We did as we had nowhere to put it. It wasn't even one of the newer more aerodynamic ones. Around town I Didnt notice any difference to how the car handled or fuel consumption. For long journeys it was needed anyway.

Problem solved then, even if it did take 5 years of waiting Grin

And I was all psyched up to add that the box, or even just the bars is flaming noisy. The background noise of that, a radio and toddlers is enough to make you need a recovery holiday on a silent retreat.
