Trolls

AIBU to find it tedious when posters start shouting "troll" just because an OP puts down views which differ from the norm or are more articulately expressed than is customary?

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 23/07/2010 12:50

are u a troll op?

Hassled · 23/07/2010 12:53

The spaces, goldenlife, you left spaces, didn't you? Page 9 of the textbook I handed out at the start. Maybe if you spent less time chatting you wouldn't be making these schoolgirl errors.

goldenlife · 23/07/2010 13:14

Hassled I never read Page 9's. I have always regarded odd numbers as the bad guys. Since I was little I have only ever liked the even numbers.

i like the 'very interesting first post' and 'welcome to mumsnet' comments which indicate someone is thinking along the 'trip trap' lines!!!

goldenlife · 23/07/2010 14:15

ILoveTiffany I know! and the [hmmm] if one mentions one's butler or housekeeper.

RustyBear · 11/08/2010 13:28

There's only two ms in hmm....

tethersend · 11/08/2010 13:45

I can't wait for the time the OP just says "Yes. I'm a troll. Ta-daa" or somesuch.

QuizteamBleakley · 11/08/2010 15:30

I have a very stupid question... I've joined MN recently and have read about being flamed, what goes with frangipan and various other things and often see people posting "TROLL". I 'get' most of what's going on but what exactly is a troll, in the context of MN? At the mo I only post on very 'soft' stuff or things I'm certain about but I know there'll come a time when I've overdone the merlot. Is one a troll or does one troll? (apols for the slight hijack!)

sorky · 11/08/2010 15:35

Was Rarebird a troll?

TanteAC · 11/08/2010 15:40

Oh thankyou quiz I have no idea what a troll is...? How do I avoid accidental trollery? Confused

pagwatch · 11/08/2010 15:41

I have never been called a troll and rarely call other people trolls. Which means I am not a journalist but probably quite dull

notwavingjustironing · 11/08/2010 15:46

No, Pag you are not dull

thumbwitch · 11/08/2010 15:48

A troll is someone who winds up other posters in various ways. You can google it and it will tell you; MN trolls are not really any different.

They might be:
a) malicious
b) attention-seeking
c) joking around

The last group are tolerated fairly well, especially if it's a good wind up. The former two are not.

We have some "famous" trolls - the one I remember best (because I was involved in it) is CVQ, a pretty disturbed class b) troll, who upset several people. She claimed to have had a baby through rape and was constantly attention-seeking - anyway, she upset one regular poster enormously and it all went tits up from there.

Another one, I think it was The Wilted Rose, managed to get money out of posters for something.

More recently was Dizzymare, who was a class a) and b) troll - she claimed to have been pg with twins and then lost them at 22w, I think. Lots of heartache all round until she was outed as a regular troll on several forums, not just MN.

The point in general is that if something feels unbelievable, people may start calling 'troll'.

Ways to avoid trollery - don't namechange unless you absolutely have to; don't do an "AIBU by stealth" - i.e. dripfeed information that substantially affects your OP; and get your facts right. Any slip will result in accusations of trollery!

Good luck!Wink

pagwatch · 11/08/2010 15:50

GrinI never spot trolls though and am always impressed when people twig troll based on inconsistency of story etc. Some people have a great eye for detail. It is quite a talent

thumbwitch · 11/08/2010 15:54

Pag - you troll!
Wink

Oblomov · 11/08/2010 15:59

most troll acqusations are reasonable. which ones do you think are not ?
coem on, you can't make such silly comments and then not give us any evidence.

seondly what you say is rubbish. total bollocks. "OP puts down views which differ from the norm ". no, variety of views on mn. most are not unique. most , will eventually find someone who agrees.
"or are more articulately expressed than is customary? "
how incredibly offensive. what ? we object wehn somoen is eloquent ? don't you think we are too, highly intelligent women ?

what a lod of nonsense thsi is.

are you a troll ?

TanteAC · 11/08/2010 16:10

until she was outed as a regular troll on several forums, not just MN.

Wow - and I thought I had no life by being on mumsnet all the time lol

Thanks for the heads up!

sorky · 11/08/2010 16:13

TWR really?!?

I feel so stupid! I organised for Tescos to deliver shopping to her :(

How humiliating....

I'm loving your work at the minute LeQueen Grin, very funny

thumbwitch · 11/08/2010 16:21

I think so sorky - twas a bit before my time but she is always mentioned by older MNers as being one. I don't think she was entirely a troll though - but she is classed as one because she got things out of other posters (money, food, stuff). Not sure.

Pag - can you remember?

Marjee · 11/08/2010 16:30

Does anyone remember sweetmuff? I didn't post on that one but was feeling quite sorry for her until her ranting outburst!

sorky · 11/08/2010 16:32

I feel an utter fool :(

I was quite concerned with the Rarebird one, that turned very weird.

Dizzymare I stayed away from. I didn't suspect she was troll, but it was worryingly not right

StealthPolarBear · 11/08/2010 16:36

tethersend, if you search for SteveLada you should get your required "Ta da thanks ladies" posts.

sorky, not a troll as such, just an MNer on the make, exaggerating a bit I think. AFAIK she is still aorund or has been recently
