"Nothing" is beautiful.

And "Love You Forever" is an all-time tear-jerker

(I can't even read that plain text without sobbing!)

MilkNoSugarPlease · 24/07/2010 19:37

Um, I couldn't bring myself to read "goodbye mog" as a child

Nor 2 months ago when asked to by friends DS...im 22

roadkillbunny · 24/07/2010 19:41

Okay I just read the 'love you forever' and I am sitting crying my eyes out like a right wally!

wigglybeezer · 24/07/2010 19:52

Peepo does it for me too. I think you are right about it making us think of our Grandparents (my Dgrandfather didn't see my DM until she was four...sniff).

wigglybeezer · 24/07/2010 19:53

I also cry because my three are too big for peepo now and I don't have a baby in the house anymore...sob.

MrsMiamla · 24/07/2010 19:57

i feel completely heartless now... i really don't like peepo! I skip pages and only read half the text on the pages DS does get to see. i've tried, I really have but I just don't like it
sorry all but OP, yes, YABU

Chunkamatic · 24/07/2010 19:58

YANBU. This was one of my favourite books when I was little, used to love studying the pictures to see what else I could find...

I mist up when I read it to DS1. Have to say it's not one of his favourites though! I'm trying to introduce Burgular Bill at the moment too....

Bicnod · 24/07/2010 20:03

YANBU - it's the 'mother with a baby just like him' that gets me every time.

I started reading Peepo to DS when he was tiny and it was still very overwhelming being a mother with a baby.

crabwoman · 24/07/2010 20:10

YANBU.
My Parents brought it at christmas for my DD, who was 7 days old. I cried when i opened it.

They also brought the baby me 'eye spy'!
Its wonderous!

CreepyFunbags · 24/07/2010 21:08

I love Peepo and Dogger. I think Dogger really captures emotions we remember from childhood. The panic and helplessness when he sees Dogger on the stall but the lady won't listen to him and he can't find his mum and dad!

Peepo is just beautiful, DD and I read it then go back looking at all the little pictures in the corners afterwards.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 24/07/2010 21:13

I love Peepo, and so do my children. We had it when my brother was a baby, but only now I realise the poignancy.

I got emotional having to read Six Dinner Sid to DS (about a black cat) the morning after our cat was put down

yellowkiwi · 24/07/2010 21:21

I love Peepo and it does make feel a bit teary but the one that always gets me actually crying is 'Once There Were Giants'. It shows a baby growing up until she is the 'giant' with a baby of her own. No idea why but even thinking about it now is making me well up!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 24/07/2010 21:22

I remember that one yellowkiwi - must try and find it at the library

yellowkiwi - Once There were Giants is the one that I cannot read without weeping a bit!

parakeet · 24/07/2010 22:57

But how about The Smartest Giant in Town?

It's the last page that gets me...because he was so KIND y'see?

PiratePrincess · 24/07/2010 23:17

Mine is Guess How Much I Love You.

"I love you right up to the moon...and back."

MrsMiamla · 24/07/2010 23:20

but why, for example, does 'mother with a baby just like him' upset people?

i'm feeling so cold blooded but i'm willing to try and change!

thefirstmrsDeVere · 24/07/2010 23:21

Puff the Magic Dragon for me! DC4 loves it at the moment and I have to whisper 'dragons live for ever, but not so little boys' because it always gets me. The boys think its part of the story now.

I have just bought 'Forever Young' based on the Bob Dylan lyrics. Its a beautiful book. I discovered it whilst searching for the song on youtube.

I cant read it yet. We played the song at DD's funeral. Its such a lovely book with beautiful illustrations.

vInTaGeVioLeT · 24/07/2010 23:30

YANBU at all - brings a huuuuuuge lump to my throat snivels

bea · 24/07/2010 23:57

I love this book and it will always remind me of the time of the joy of the first baby and that lovely bedtime read! it's the very first real book that dd1 loved... we used to love pointing out winston churchill!

edam · 25/07/2010 00:13

Mrs - it's the rhythm of the words, it's the poignancy of the pictures, it's the whole feel of the book. A child's eye view of a happy world with a happy family but us adults know it's wartime and Daddy's uniform is hanging on the back door...

MrsMiamla · 25/07/2010 08:07

hmm, ok, I promise that I will read the whole book, without skipping any of it, to DS tonight and I'll report back tomorrow!

crabwoman · 25/07/2010 09:07

Sorry it's not I spy. I meant each peach pear plum! Begging your pardon!

DinahRod · 25/07/2010 09:21

Peepo is so beautifully poignant is makes me cry too.

And very sad re the death of his wife who illustrated it.
