To be a bit miffed that a couple who have just won £7m on the lottery are still planning to go on their £9.50 bargain holiday?

You're being unreasonable - it's none of your business really. If they keep going on their £9.50 holidays - they'll have the £7 million much much longer :D

Having said that - it would blooming change me if I won - I'd be straight out of moron landlord's tender clutches for a starter! Some people just want their normality of work/family/routine I guess, but with the cushion that they don't need to ever worry about money - they'd probably get bored not working (I'd quite happily not work myself but that's me).

PuppyMonkey · 23/07/2010 11:35

I know it's none of my business, but that's MN for you.

Actually I can't for the life of me understand why winners would go public with the news.... especially having everyone in the local paper read about it. I'd keep schtum. If I played it.

I would probably keep schtum too.

I would make anonymous donations to a couple of local projects that I am involved with, we are trying to raise money to repair the village hall and build a new nursery school. Between them those projects need about £250,000, it would be nice to be able to top up their fundraising so that the projects could go ahead now. I would also give money to things that my children use, like the school, the local park, the village football club etc.

I would buy a bigger house, but nothing too flashy (the sort of climb up the property ladder that could be explained away as an inheritance from great aunt Maude). I would also buy my mum a house more suitable for her (again, could be explained as an inheritance).

I'm not sure whether I would carry on working as I am involved with a lot of voluntary activities which would TBH keep me busy. But I know DH would carry on (he might retire earlier though).

We would have slightly nicer holidays, but again nothing hugely flashy.

A lot of money would be put away for when the DC are older and when we retire. It would be nice not to have to worry about the future.

I am probably incredibly boring though!

There should be a rule about lottery winners.

If you dont blow some of it on nice cars, holidays and a big house you should give it back.

If you aren't going to change your lifestyle, why play it?

I do know there are various to that quesetion but really, spend it people. Spend it and invest it!!!

Or give it to charity. Dont just shove it in the bank and carry on as you were before.

ladydeedy · 23/07/2010 12:26

Gosh, why is that making you so cross? Good luck to them, to spend that money on whatever they want, or give it all to charity if that's what they want too.
We have friends who won the lottery and they both still work and why shouldnt they? They want to continue to contribute to society and to have a normal kind of life and not turn into obese alcoholics (that's what I'd be if I had all that money! . The money has meant they havent got a mortgage any more and they have been able to buy a house for each of their kids and their parents.
They holiday in the UK as that is what they like and they remain true to their friends. Good for them and I am happy for them.

PuppyMonkey · 23/07/2010 12:37

It's not making me " so cross", it's making me "a bit miffed."

ladydeedy · 23/07/2010 12:38

but yeah, on reflection, I wouldnt mind a bit either!

ladydeedy · 23/07/2010 12:39

ok, well if I win you can have some (and vice versa?)

PuppyMonkey · 23/07/2010 12:42

Ah, but I won't win it because I don't play it!! Mug's game etc etc.

YABU

I play the lotto all the time, and dram of how I'd spend the money.

But in many ways, no, it wouldn't change me.

I prefer primark pants to M&S, for example. I don't like swanky hotels but prefer midrange. I don't enjoy champagne but love cold beer.

etc, etc

I'd love to win the lotto so I could live in a nice house and never have to worry about money again, but in many ways I'd still enjoy the same things that I do now. And yes, I'd still work as I enjoy my job and I'd be bored doing nothing all day.

And as for 'why don't they give it to me', I'd imagine that giving it away is exactly what they plan to do, only to people they actually know, for instance their kids, friends etc.

lal123 · 23/07/2010 12:46

YABU - but you know that of course! Do you think that once someone has £x amount of money in the bank they should give up their job so that someone who "needs it" can have it???

ladydeedy · 23/07/2010 12:49

Oh I've just remembered I dont do the lottery either! Still, it was a nice idea....
I did it a couple of times but couldnt bear the weekly disappointment!

FindingMyMojo · 23/07/2010 15:49

YANBU - they have squillions now. They must therefore donate everything from their pre-win life to more needy people and go live on top of a mountain in Switzerland, drink only fine wine and eat restaurants every day whether they want to or not. Anything else would just be plain selfish of them.

Don't they realise they were totally different people before and everything pre 'the money' is now irrelevant to them? Who on earth do they think they are?

PuppyMonkey · 23/07/2010 15:52

Quite right, Mojo. Glad someone agrees with me.
