Henna tattoo and school?

My 6 year old came home from school yesterday with a henna tattoo covering most of his forearm, it is a huge tiger and it also says his name in big capital letters, now the school did not ask permission for him to have this done, we were not even told a thing about it. Am I being unreasonable in thinking they should not have done this without asking parental permission? he is a page boy on saturday and he has to wear a short sleeved shirt, any chance it will fade before then? and how about allergic reactions, I have read horro stories about henna tattoo's causing awful scars?
I am actually a bit cross about this, so AIBU?

Music madness - salt and water is good advice, but we use lemon and sugar to develop the colour into a darker shade, so that may not work.

I would be hopping mad and issuing formal complaints left, right and centre, sorry Seeker.
And I am a teacher who is normally chilled about such things and very anti people complaining about petty things.
Hope you managed to get it off OK.

it didn't come off totally but we managed to stand him in the pictures so that his left arm was hidden so not too bad, I just HATE the way it looks as its huge and not that brilliantly done either, but then I hate those spiderman tattoo things you can get as well especially when they are half coming off urgh!
will definitely speak to head in sept about the wiseness of such things being done without permission.

Alright so I understand this is 8 years later. However I would like to clarify some things. Red or Brown henna is actually safe to use, it’s black henna which is dangerous because it contains PPD. PPD is found in many hair dyes and such and can cause allergic reactions. Most allergic reactions take place instantly while others take the most a week or two. So don’t worry too much, cuz if it doesn’t happen after a month, then I’m pretty certain your son is fine.
