I hate buying jeans!

I love clothes shopping, but buying jeans has to be the most depressing thing ever. It is always guaranteed to make me feel fat, and it is very infuriating how you can be one size in a certain pair and a different size in another pair in the same shop. Is it just me who seems to be 2 sizes bigger when it comes to jeans? Is it the curse of having hips?

Sorry, just need to let off some steam!!

MrsC - have you tried Long Tall Sally?
They do 34" leg and size 16.

TrillianAstra · 23/07/2010 10:54

MrsC - so taller people are no allowed to be as wide as short people? That's a bit backwards!

Loujalou · 23/07/2010 10:57

I quite like New Look for jeans. They are not that hard wearing but I just buy skinnies now (Gok Wan went on about them so I tried and don't look too fat) but they do all sorts there.

What about a pair of these bad boys?

MrsC2010 · 23/07/2010 11:36

Quite! It doesn't seem logical! I did feel a little 'emotional' at being told I was effectively sized out of a high street fashion chain! I do have 2 pairs of good maternity jeans from there though so have forgiven them a little, these should fit for a while! (I'm not weird buying mat jeans when not pregnant, due next week.)

Will try LTS, thanks.

midnightexpress · 23/07/2010 11:37

My old G-star jeans were the best fit I ever had.

And I loathe buying jeans.

MarineIguana · 23/07/2010 11:37

MrsC that is so true about Gap. If I'm a size 16, then maybe I'm more likely to be tall, eh, you dunderheads???!

Different Gap cuts vary a lot in size, but I can squeeze into a size 14 in their curvy jeans and so I can wear 14 long. With Gap, that's OK, as they "give" a lot with a few wears (so have become effectively 16 long). But their no 16 long policy is totally daft.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 23/07/2010 11:43

YANBU.

I have a fat bum skinny waist so am probably out of proportion from model type women who its seems most clothes are designed for. I'm also 5ft2" so need petite jeans so that more than halves my options.

Brands I have tried and are shit;

Every concession known to man in Debenhams
Monsoon
Next
New Look
Dorothy Perkins
Primark
asda
Tesco
m&s

I've got a pair from Gap that a few months ago were quite nice but are now too tight. Next size up though is way too big, gapes at the waist at the back.

All jeans I buy gape at the waist at the back. I could put both my fists in the waistband and still have plenty of room, but the next size down I can't do up! I hate belts as well so that doesn't help.

Principles used to do nice jeans, I could sob when they went bust.

So where else can I try?

piratecat · 23/07/2010 11:44

those skinny jeans, how do you work out your size tho, as an american say 14 is biggger than a uk 14.

TrillianAstra · 23/07/2010 11:46

For American - go down two sizes.

So a US 'size zero' is a UK size 4.

If you are a UK size 14 the equivalent is a US size 10. Although of course there are variations just like in different UK shops.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/07/2010 11:51

I second Land's End for trousers. I've not bought jeans from them, but they do lovely chinos and linen trousers and you can specify length to the nearest quarter inch with a lot of styles.
I find them very flattering on the waist, no bulky fastenings and drawstrings (yes Boden I'm looking at you!) which add inches under a long top.

SloanyPony · 23/07/2010 11:54

Here you go, [http://www.slimthing.co.uk/section.php/24/1/hello__skinnyjeans Slimthing]] sells them.

No, you YANBU. Buying jeans is horrible. I love wearing them and since I had my baby I can't find a nice pair to fit. I am same size but 'different'. Nothing fits and it's all a big pile of poo!

All I want is a pair of jeans that fit me, look nice and don't cost the earth.

Nice to know I'm not alone though.

piratecat · 23/07/2010 12:02

145 squids.

going to have to stick with Peacocks!!

will check out Landsend

minipie · 23/07/2010 12:23

stripeyknickers

You sound like me (short legs, generous bottom and thighs, small waist)

Try White Stuff - their trousers usually fit me well, though I haven't tried their jeans. And they do a short length (which most pleasingly they call "regular").

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 23/07/2010 12:30

Just had a look at the White Stuff website, they haven't got a shop near me. Am now contemplating ordering some online, they do do free returns.......

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 23/07/2010 12:32

Ah, they're out of stock anyway.

PlanetEarth · 23/07/2010 12:42

I like Next for jeans (big waist, average hips). No good for you hourglass types though! Got a pair from Gap recently too.

Otherwise experience has led to a few main rules for me:

  • Try on with shoes - I hate it when they turn out too short once you've got your shoes on
  • Sit down/crouch down in changing room - hate that crotch-pinching feeling, or finding out too late they give you a builder's bum
  • Avoid low-rise at all costs (YMMV, but for some of us they are very unflattering!)
  • No matter how much you like them, avoid the worn-type jeans. They will fall apart after a couple of months.
Lucy85 · 23/07/2010 12:52

I am 5'8, normal leg length unless wanting to wear with heels then long leg. 12 on top, 14 on bottom. Except when buying jeans.

I either need short or normal length, and normally a size 16.

It's ridiculous. Also then I find they are too big after a while, they seem to stretch over time then they fall down and I have to wear belts.

Arrrggghhh.
