BythewayItsStillMe · 22/07/2010 22:31

Bit vague...

Katisha · 22/07/2010 22:33

I thought I saw a Time Team ages ago where they said there was a wood henge as well.

Ladyanonymous · 22/07/2010 22:34

Sorry here

why are you at the cost? the site is of world importance and it's a national disgrace, quite frankly

secunda · 22/07/2010 22:35

yeah but a visitor centre isn't improving the maintenance of the site, it's an extra

Ladyanonymous · 22/07/2010 22:36

Really when a lot of people will be losing jobs left right and centre in other areas?

People go to see the stones not the visitor centre.

part of the plan for improvement/visitor's centre was to close the adjacent A road and return the stones to brooding splendour

THAT's the real shame

IFancyKevinELevin · 22/07/2010 22:43

I'm confused as there's been a Woodhenge sign on the road towards Collingbourne Ducis since, well, forever....?

I am on the fence, it's hard to think about spending money excessively, but in the long term, it could generate a lot of income from Tourism. We live a mile away from Amesbury and walk the dogs there every weekend. There is definite potential, and if Stonehenge was in many other countries it would perhaps have more thought and attention.

Perhaps they need to rethink design costs for building a centre? The dodgy tunnel is horrendous.

Ladyanonymous · 22/07/2010 22:50

I agree but £25 million

Surely it can be done much more cheaply?

They aren't getting the money from the gov though Lady are they? I thought they were told to get private funding.

Stonehenge gets 900,000 visitors a year. If they spent £15-20 each whilst there, on Stonehenge pencil tops, entry fee, an interactive movie or whatever they are planning, it could pay itself back in two or three years.

What would be a real tragedy is that someone like McDonalds come up with the cash if the stones were painted yellow and had a lightup golden arch in the centre. Joking!
