I live in a village about 500 metres away from a church. Since the windows have been open this summer we have heard the bells ring through the night. When they ring at 5am they disturb ds2 and it is then morning in our house.

I bumped into the vicar today and asked him why this had started to happen and he says it always has "church bells always ring on the hour". I am tired and grumpy about this and feel like going and ringing his doorbell at 5am. AIBU?

The reason you haven't noticed it before is that we haven't had a summer for three years.
And YABU

Rockbird · 22/07/2010 21:42

Why are they ringing on the hour? Church bells call people to church so should be rung just before, apart from practise sessions (DH is a ringer). YAtotallyNBU to not want them clanging in your ears at 5am.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/07/2010 21:42

I rather liked it when I was up during the night with the the DC and I heard the church bells ringing. I never hear them now. Desensitised I think!

Katisha · 22/07/2010 21:44

How long have you lived there?

Rockbird · 22/07/2010 21:45

I stand corrected, DH says some towers do have bells (with little automatic hammers) that ring on the hour. But I don't think YABU to not want this in the middle of the night.

ArseHolio · 22/07/2010 21:46

Why do you live in a village ?

We live near a church and although I hear the bells they never wake me.

It's 5 dongs at 5am (obv) it's 10 seconds of moderate noise.

5am is morning is anyones house.

GeekyGirl · 22/07/2010 21:47

I would have thought there should be rules like not before 9am or after 11pm, or whatever the times are for pneumatic drills, car horns, etc

OrmRenewed · 22/07/2010 21:47

Oh dear. Bad idea to move near to a church then. It's just like a clock chiming the hour.

FakePlasticTrees · 22/07/2010 21:47

YABU - you moved 500 metres from a church with bells. They won't have suddenly started, it's just you have your windows open. This is Britain, it'll be pissing down soon enough and you'll have your windows shut.

Madinitials · 22/07/2010 21:48

I have lived here for 4 years and only since this May have I noticed our local church bells ringing. I agree with DilysPrice and blame the summer for my open windows.

thisisyesterday · 22/07/2010 21:49

yes yabu
the bells wil always have rung on the hour. you can't ask them to stop just because you don't like it!

orienteerer · 22/07/2010 21:51

I don't know much about church bells but I'm sure they can be programmed not to ring between say 23.00 and 07.00. We live near a church and the bells only seem to ring between 06.00 and 22.00, likewise we previously lived abroad and bells only rang 06.00-23.00 albeit every 15 mins!

Been here 12 years, never heard it day or night before this year. Its a very large village w an A road through not a quaint one with a duck pond. I like the weekend bells and dont complain about evening practice but all through the night is just too much.

OP posts:
LittleB · 22/07/2010 22:07

YABU, don't complain about the church, it was there before you were. I used to live near a church and it rang every 15mins aswell as striking the hour, throughout the night. You can always shut your windows. Sorry but it really annoys me when people moan about things that were there before them, trees dropping leaves in gardens, badgers visiting gardens, farm noises and muck on the road, church bells, all there before the homeowners, often before the houses.

jollyma · 22/07/2010 22:11

Maybe its not as bad as i thought. I'm so glad its not every 15 mins! I'm off to bed now but thanks for all your opinions. It would just be great to have a full night sleep for the first time in 18 months!

My Mamgu's house was next to a church and I used to love listening to the church bells throughout the night - it was so different to being in the city. And, yes, you do desensitise to it very quickly.

grendel · 22/07/2010 22:27

When I was a student I used to live in a city-centre flat with windows that overlooked a church, just a pavement-width away, which chimed every quarter hour, day and night. It was LOUD. But incredibly, I did get used to it pretty quickly and never had any difficulty sleeping.

chocolatefroggie · 22/07/2010 22:29

YABU! the church bells have always rung you've just not noticed before, I know how hard it is when you're up all night with a little one and there are noises but if you try not to notice it as a nuisance then you will find you quickly don't notice anymore!

I wonder how many years the church (and it's clock tower) have been there? And how many years you have lived nearby to it, Jolly?

In terms of bring a long-standing part of the community, I bet the church wins hands down!

elah10 · 22/07/2010 23:13

I am on holiday at the moment in Cumbria and we are near a beautiful old church which rings every 15 mins and I love it!! I keep the window open at night just to hear them. Maybe its because where we are is such a lovely, peaceful, tiny village and the bells seem to symbolise all that is olde worlde about it, I dont know, but I really like them, and will miss them when i go home on Sat

sunnydelight · 22/07/2010 23:33

Are you serious? You bought a house beside a CHURCH and are complaining about the bells. I'd love to be the Environmental Health Officer hearing that complaint - you'll give the office their biggest laugh in years.
