To think that if you've got a cat which hunts prolifically you should either

Keep it in or put a fucking bell on it's collar.

I've just seen a neighbours new cat leap from the ground and grab a goldfinch from one of my feeders. Yesterday I found 2 piles of feathers and the day before a dead sparrow on my doorstep. In 4 years of feeding I've never had a cat problem untill this new one arrived.

I'm going to have to stop feeding them, I feel like I'm luring them to their deaths. Sad as it sounds I'm gutted, feeding the birds is something I get immense pleasure from.

I'm really quite pissed off

Nooooooo!

We are not sure if it was anti-freeze or slug or snail pellets but it was certainly a toxin.

Two and a half weeks ago our cat was on the point of collapse, he had lost all balance, could barely walk and was very very ill. He also temporarily went blind and was very ataxic.

We got him straight to the emergency vet (we were lucky it was a Saturday morning - a week day and that would have been it). He was put straight on a drip but the following week he was in and out of the vets like a yo yo with acute sickness and diahorrea, being admitted twice and spend much time on a drip, with IV antibiotics and antacids. After a week everyone was so concerned he was scanned to rule out tumours but the scans just showed thickened intestines due to the ingestion of an unknown toxin.

We very nearly lost him and thank goodness we have pet insurance - the final bill was just over 2,000.

out of curiosity (and seeing that beautyspot has been corrected) can anyone else hear the sonic cat scarers? I can and they drive me batty. Really quite uncomfortable (oh the irony)

Sadly my badcat would need lead weights tying to her ankles to slow her hunting down. She does wear a bell and it doesnt make much difference.

BeatriceLaBranche · 14/02/2011 20:04

I really don't think someone would innocently suggest anti freeze.

BeatriceLaBranche · 14/02/2011 20:07

Glad your cat is ok onceamai.

kitten, I used to be able to hear the sonic mouse things, so it can't be unusual (I don't have whiskers of any kind)

I am just glad that our cat is not even bothered with or thought of as a nuisance out in the country. I would hate for him to be poisoned.

Northernlurker · 14/02/2011 20:09

As the owner of a beautiful city cat I can't tell you how angry the thought of people poisoning cats makes me Angry I don't think it was an 'innocent' suggestion either.

BendyBob · 14/02/2011 20:11

Me too Northern. I also have two beautiful cats - we love them to bits. The thought that anyone could do such a thing horrifies meSadAngry

My cat is an evil hunter-killer-bastard so we don't feed the birds except during snow when we keep the cats in.

Lion poo apprently works very well (my Gran swears by it); cats are scared off by evidence of a bigger cat than them. You can buy it from zoos and my local big garden centre sells it. Not sure what it smells like though...

feralgirl · 14/02/2011 20:11

I'd fucking kill anyone who poisoned my cat.

onceamai · 14/02/2011 20:12

If only I knew feral girl but I'm hoping it was unintentional!

We let the dog out whenever we see cats in our garden. My children were very upset a few years back to see that a neighbour's cat had scared off a pair of robins, who'd left their fledglings to die.

The dog barks and growls very ferociously and the cats run away.

schoolsecretary · 15/02/2011 09:35

If you don't want the cats in your garden but like the birds use one of the RSPCA recommended sonic chasers we've got one and the birds don't notice it but the cats run a mile.. sorry can't do link am on my phone.
