Men and women, vive le difference or what?

The fact that men in authority have been unfair to women for yonks should not blind us to fundamental gender differences.

Take humour. Men quip to each other "Nice
suit, Bert, did you get free underfelt with it."
No one with any sensity would make that remark to a woman.

I will reword that "Very few people would make that remark to a woman"

I would add I only know about the English culture. Other cultures may be different.
My typing is improving. I do not expect a medal.

I have absolutely no idea what your point is.

thumbwitch · 21/07/2010 14:57

Ditto niceguy2 - cannot see what you are trying to say, nor what your AIBU is actually about.

Chil1234 · 21/07/2010 15:00

It's a troll... They've been posting irrelevant, semi-literate garbage all over the place this week. Bye Bye troll....

SweetBeadieRussell · 21/07/2010 15:02

what's a free underfelt?

SweetBeadieRussell · 21/07/2010 15:05

is it a troll or is there some scary new computer program which spews out chatroom posts in jibberish?

Psammead · 21/07/2010 15:06

Underfelt = underlay? Carpet reference?

I think the OP is trying to say that despite certain elements of sexism, there is simply a difference in attitude to men and women. ie that joke would be 'acceptable' when aimed at a man, but rude to a woman.

So... we should just accept that there women should be treated differently. Is that it?

Chil1234 · 21/07/2010 15:09

@Psammead... your point would be well-made if anyone at any time ever (outside of a Ken Dodd concert) had heard someone actually say 'Did you get free underfelt with that suit?'

It may not be a troll but it's certainly not the fizziest drink in the vending machine.

thumbwitch · 21/07/2010 15:09

Have reported it anyway.

joke - suggesting that the suit looks like carpet hence free underlay/felt.

Psammead · 21/07/2010 15:25

Chil1234 and what if the OP is Ken Dodd?

mayorquimby · 21/07/2010 15:29

I presumed the joke meant an extra layer under it i.e. the wearer of the suit was a bit pudgy looking in it hence why it would be said to a man but not a woman.
Still no idea what's going on though

Chil1234 · 21/07/2010 15:34

(Ken Dodd posts on MN!!!!??? How tickled I am!)

Chil1234 · 21/07/2010 15:37

Hold on. It's the wrong joke. It's not 'Nice suit Bert'....that makes no sense whatsoever. It should start out 'Nice hair Bert... does it come with free underlay?' The hair is a rug.... Geddit!!!

PMSL!!!!!

thumbwitch · 21/07/2010 15:38

Ah that must be the difference between male and female humour, MayorQ - that wouldn't have occurred to me

Not that good a joke, I feel.

mayorquimby · 21/07/2010 15:46

I'd use the term humour fairly loosely in this situation.
If one wants to see the true nature of male humour verses female humour one must only look as far as Milligan,Cleese,The Office,Alan Partridge, Brass Eye vs. Catherine Tait and that other new show which is the antithesis of comedy.
I am of course stacking the deck in favour of males on this one.

mayorquimby · 21/07/2010 15:48

*versus, not verses.

thumbwitch · 21/07/2010 15:50

Milligan - check
Cleese - check
The office - not so sure
Partridge - no
Brass Eye - haven't a clue, no idea
Catherine Tait - sometimes

I do love the really puerile humour in Sex Lives of the Potato Men though - have you seen that film?

mayorquimby · 21/07/2010 16:16

Yes. It's got some brilliantly stupid laughs in it.
Especially when Johnny Vegas is talking to his son about the impending divorce and he goes
"it's not fair me and your mum fighting like this is it? do you know who I feel sorry for in all this. ME. I might have to move out."

ShadeofViolet · 21/07/2010 16:24

Are you drunk OP?

sapphireblue · 21/07/2010 16:47

vive la difference........if you're going to talk twaddle at least use the correct gender. Quite ironic considering the contents of your OP.

GabbyLoggon · 28/07/2010 15:47

Am I in touch with Mrs and Mr Angry?

I was quoting Northern Male humour. Watch
Eastenders for the southern type.

I was forgetting that Mumsnett is not parochial. I know Britain. But do watch USA TV

Lists.

Milligan? very unhappy genius.

Cleese? funny but depressed.

The Office? No. but hes good in stand up

Tait? like swearing grannie

Brass Eye Great.

Victoria Wood Best woman comic

Cameron? dull, needs funny hat and red nose.

ragged · 28/07/2010 15:51

You're still doing it, Gabby (talking nonsense, I mean).
I'm trying to imagine hearing you on the radio saying all that... yup, still sounds like nonsense .

I think the problem with you media types is you think that everybody else goes around with media references as their primary cultural references. The reality is so so different.

ChippingIn · 28/07/2010 16:04

chil1234 - not the fizziest drink in the vending machine - I am so stealing that!

GabbyLoggon · 03/08/2010 14:51

well ragged, do you laugh at dave Camerons jokes. Or fall about at Nick
( I think politics gets everywhere. )
