Since when has a cheese sarnie been an indicator of disposable income?

DD1 told her friend she usually had a cheese sandwich when she got home from school.

Her friend asked her
'Why? Are you poor??'

Where do you recon her friend got the idea that a cheese sarnie means you've got no cash?

I once ordered a goose for New Year from a tiny local small holding. When the guy delivered it and asked for 36 quid I nearly fell over! Then dh was ill and couldn't eat it! It did make a nice curry though with the leftovers.

Cheese and bread is most definitely not cheap where I live in the US now. A good loaf will set you back around $5 and if you want to avoid processed cheese slices of the kind that McD's use then count on spending at least that again on a reasonable block of cheese (more if you want the really good local Oregon stuff!)

I had a cheese sandwich for lunch and DH is one of those horrible banker types.

It wasn't even a posh cheese sandwich, just normal bread with butter and cheddar cheese.

No artisans or buffalos involved.

I occasionally go to the poncetastic deli in town for bits to make a meal at home.
Even just asking for teeny bits of this and that costs a firtune.
£30 easily for enough to fill us.
Birthdays only, but sooo worth it.
Yhe baby octopus in spicy sauce, brie de meux and boquerones are our favourites, oh and balsamic onions.

Poncey cheese costs a fortune though.

I wish I craved Mr Kipling cakes, but no, I like stinky cheese.

I need to marry a rich man a better job.

Balsamic onions give me terrible terrible gas, we are talking uncontrollable paint melting farts here.

They are yummy though, so sometimes the neighbours just have to suffer.

muggglewump · 21/07/2010 18:22

Neighbours?
Just DD has to put up with mine.
She is not amused.

They are delicious though.
Last time I was in, not for a feast, just for anchovy paste, as it's the only place I can get it, I saw stuffed eggs.
I'll be getting some of those soon.
DD might even move out when the effects of those hit I hope.

Morloth · 21/07/2010 18:46

It really is awful.

Jbck · 21/07/2010 18:47

I'm also a cheese mug connoisseur in a local deli, I asked for a small piece of lovely smelling Orkney cheddar and was charged a fiver for the privilege. It was about a quarter, the stuff I buy now is about the same a kilo!

Neighbours daughter once asked what I was cooking, I was cleaning and slicing chicken breasts. Chicken I said, 6 year old looks and says, but where's the batter?!

Pre-children I decided no McDs for them ever.

muggglewump · 21/07/2010 19:16

Have you stuck to it?

My DD loves a Maccas, more for the plastic tat toy, than the food.

AgentZigzag · 21/07/2010 19:18

The overpriced stuff reminded me of the 'I saw you coming' sketches from Harry and Paul, the one at the grocers is pretty apt and very very funny.

Obviously taking the piss out of the people who don't mind paying those prices, and not in any way suggesting any posters on here are like that mwah mwah mwah mwah

On an episode of diggnation once the boys were asked whether they would prefer to give up cheese or blow jobs.

It was so funny, cheese is in/on so many things. DH wasn't sure. Its OK, he doesn't have to choose.

Jbck · 21/07/2010 22:58

Mugglwump DD1 has had a very odd few chicken selects, never a burger and only once had nuggets. DD2 has only had the chips twice and she's almost 3.

I'm not saying I don't do KFC when they're not there

DoYouWantToKnowASecret · 21/07/2010 23:36

I am poor. Please can you make me a cheese sandwich?

AgentZigzag · 22/07/2010 10:29

Once saw a fantastic 1960s TV ad by the Cheese Council (or some similar long defunct quango). It featured a boy telling his mum that his best friend's dad had a fabulous new car. She looked anxious and jealous and had to wrack her brains for ways of saving money. It ended with her face lighting up and the fabulous strapline "Must eat more cheese - it's cheap".
