To not know what bpa is?

Iv just been 'googleing' to check if it's okay to have a White filling removed whilst breastfeeding... Aparently it's not because of bpa??

I then went on to read that it's in baby bottles, sippy cups, and various other plastic containers.

Now I remember just after I had my DD there was abit of a scare in America over something toxic in bottles but I was that wrapped up in my hectic life I didn't pay much attention.

Is this something I should be worried about? Do you avoid bpa?

Thanx

I would now avoid it if I had another baby, if I was bottle feeding, would buy bpa free, and cups, plates etc. But I confess my two were born before all the bpa thing came out in the US and neither of them appear to have any health problems which could be attributed to BPA.

I breastfed anyway so she was never fed a bottle. However I do store her food in freezeable plastic containers and heat them up to defrost them. She also uses tomee tipee sippy cups.

Actually I am now wondering this dd 11months has not used a bottle but I do freeze in plastic containers and use a sippy cup.

thenightwalker · 20/07/2010 21:42

My DD is 15 almost 16 months old and have been freezing her food in plastic containers since 6 months and she has been using a sippy cup sinceshewas around 7 months.

my sippy cup is only this past month but freezing from 6months. It didn't hurt my ds but if there is a risk I would rather eliminate it.

I'm trying to store food now in glass. I used to store my own cooked baby food in used glass baby food bottles - someone told me that was the best thing to freeze it in.

slushy · 20/07/2010 21:53

Oh thanks fluffycauliflower will save a few jars .

thenightwalker · 20/07/2010 21:54

doesnt the frozen glass crack when heated?

I would think you then transfer to china bowl or something suitable for how you wish to heat it?

thenightwalker · 20/07/2010 22:06

Ahh i supose..leave it to defrost then take it out and heat it.. haha duhh sorry im abit dizzy at times! i usually heat from frozen to avoid any bacteria growing.

I had a white filling removed while bf twice as they messed it up so much... Should my dentist have warned me about any risk?

thenightwalker · 20/07/2010 22:23

I had an amalgum filling removed while breastfeeding which can be harmful. I asked my dentist and he explained the risk was very small but assured me he would be extremely careful in removing the filling as i was in so much pain it had to be done.

My DD has never shown any effects of me having it done.

bumpsnowjustplump · 20/07/2010 22:57

Bloody hell they didn't even tell me about it. I have since changed dentists as they were so rubbish, had to have the same tooth filled a total of 5 times as they never did it properly...

I am really worried now what ill effects would there be? Should I google it? Should I complain to my old dentists practice manager?

thenightwalker · 20/07/2010 23:05

I dont think a white filling being removed would do any serious harm.

These kinds of fillings fall out all the time and people even end up swallowing them.

Maybe ask your dentist next time your there but i dont think you need to worry too much

I only used bpa free cups, spoons etc for ds and thought I knew everything about bpa - until now! I didn't know white fillings contain bpa and had one removed while breast feeding also had a couple of black fillings replaced with white fillings because of cavity. I didn't feed ds for a couple of hours after the treatments though. I'm very upset now, but I had to have treatment as I was so much in pain... off to google!

bumpsnowjustplump · 20/07/2010 23:07

I will do that thanks TNW..

I just found a website which might be interesting for you as I swapped my kids to bpa-free bottles as well. They love the bottles which come in quite nice designs (also for adults!)
