Surely they shouldnt be doing that should they? My daughter says the monitoring is done by the IT department, and that one of the guys there is really 'pervy'.

School removes CCTV cameras from childrens toilets after furious protest - okay, it's the daily fail but at least there's precedent.

Big Brother Watch - interesting points in this article.

Have the school properly informed you that they're being monitored under the Data Protection Act - could be illegal otherwise.

toccatanfudge · 20/07/2010 12:36

doing a google reveals a lot of schools have been doing this for many years.

RubberDuck · 20/07/2010 12:37

You could also complain to school on the basis of the girls being uncomfortable using the toilets and point out the health risks of them holding themselves in all day rather than use them.

Miggsie · 20/07/2010 12:37

I would question how the CCTV images are stored and the data protection/child protection issues.

Will the footage be recorded? How will it be stored? Who has access to it?
Are those monitoring it aware of the data protection and information secuirty issues if it is recorded and stored on computer?

Are those monitoring the footage CRB checked?
Is there possibility the film could be copied and taken out of the school and displayed on an open forum (internet) or distributed in any way?

What is the security policy? What training have the monitoring staff recieved? What are the processes for storage and use of the material?

Under the freedom of information act, is the footage likley to be taken for legal purposes by any group who makes a request?

You may be able to tell that I work in information security?! My biggest problem at work is any electonic information concerning children, it is a minefield.

I would certainly question the head and the govenors about what this CCTV is for and how it will be used.

And do ask if the IT staff are information security trained (CISM or CISSP)...I bet they aren't.

\link{http://www.bog-standard.org\interestingly these people) suggest the use of CCTV (after consultation with pupils and parents) and is run by ERIC

MumInBeds · 20/07/2010 12:40

If there had been CCTV in the toilets at school when I was in secondary school I would have felt far safer and actually more private.

Dreadful things go on in many school toilets, other kids and do look over and under the doors and even throw things over, there's bullying and smoking and vandalism.

I can still remember the fear I had using secondary school toilets and by the time I left school I'd stopped drinking anything in the day to avoid having to use them and I now suffer a kidney problem.

toccatanfudge · 20/07/2010 12:40

try again

Miggsie - I would hope a teacher at the school has been CRB checked

Miggsie · 20/07/2010 12:41

I was thinking about the IT monitoring staff...not the teachers!

GeekOfTheWeek · 20/07/2010 12:41

Come on, own up.

Who squeezes spots and scratches their arse etc in public loos?

toccatanfudge · 20/07/2010 12:47

anyone who goes into the school/works in the school will have to be CRB checked these days don't they?

dawniedonut · 20/07/2010 12:52

I was asked at work about the possiblity of putting CCTV in the toilets (can't remember why now)but this is not allowed as in areas such as this you must have some execptation of privacy.

As it is, if you are going to install CCTV cameras in a place of work or school etc, then you need to notify employees, or presumably in the case of a school, the parents that this is due to happen and invite comments etc....

Hope this helps
