Its just so vacuous, every week it has a different diet plan in it, its obsessed with fawning over "celebs" , its fashion pages generally consist of items that cost more than most people earn in a week, its always featuring the latest "anti-aging" treatments (not just creams etc but medical treatments) as if women are nothing if they don't look 25 and god forbid we ever get old. I would say it seems to be targeted at women of 25+ yet every week they have a thing where they "style hunt" random girls in the street who they deem super-fashionable and imply this is what we should all be looking like/dressing like and usually these women are 18-21 and look like models. Oh and worse of all, it seems to try and be a "cut above" and more sophisticated than your downmarket weekly rags like heat, closer and their ilk, but really is pretty much the same when you look under the surface with its celeb-worshipping and thin-is-beautiful messages.

And why can't I resist buying it when I hate it so much

ShirleyKnot · 20/07/2010 13:48

Fuck.

I've just re-read my rant and have had the startling realisation that it's not actually aimed at me is it? (I'm 38 and not YET brain-dead)

ShirleyKnot · 20/07/2010 13:49

Gah - I'm bloody 37 NOT 38

superv1xen · 20/07/2010 13:49

oh god yeah i read that article about that vile woman and her "beautiful" family, she was awful

oh god yeah and what the hell is their obsession with taylor momsen, she is a CHILD. And dresses like a hooker IMO

notyummy · 20/07/2010 13:50

LOL at subcribing to Yours.

There's always 'The Lady' as well.

Very good for ads for 'the staff' I believe...

GetOrfMoiLand · 20/07/2010 13:51

WHY for the name of gof WHY is Mary Portas in there every damn week.

She's all right but she is not the fricking oracle.

HalfTermHero · 20/07/2010 13:52

I confess to buying Grazia each week. it is Tuesday now and I have not yet bought the latest edition. I am withdrawing slightly. It will be in my possession by this evening or else the shakes will set in. Everyone has a guilty pleasure after all.......

notyummy · 20/07/2010 13:59

Mary Portas is in there all the time because she is the partner of Grazia's fashion editor.

Oh yes....

ILovePonyo · 20/07/2010 13:59

I subscribe to Glamour. Does that make me a saddo as I am 30 in a few months?!

I too occasionally buy Grazia, and sometimes Heat and ... Easy Living

And yes to Taylor flippin Momsen, GetOrf you are aware of my feelings about her!

theressomethingaboutmarie · 20/07/2010 14:00

Mary Portas is in there every week because she's married to Melanie Rickey who is Fashion Editor, or something like that, for Grazia.

superv1xen · 20/07/2010 14:01

iloveponyo

i buy glamour and i am ALREADY 30

PommePoire · 20/07/2010 14:03

Re: Mary Portas omnipresence. Presumably because she is in a civil partnership with the editor, or maybe the fashion editor? One of them anyway.

I thought I quite liked Easy Living, then realised that it's like a trendier version of Good Housekeeping and maybe I'm growing old before my time. It is a bit bunting cupcake, but Red drove me mad because of the ratio of advertising to editorial - too bloomin' much.

ShirleyKnot · 20/07/2010 14:05

Is she that silly twit who used to be on 10 Years Younger with that OTHER SILLY BERK; and she'd do 3 looks for 3 age ranges using one "bang on trend" style.

So she'd dress the 20 something in a zebra effect pelmet with matching clogs and purple tights

The 30 something would wear a zebra effect long dress with crocs and a big handbag

The 40 something would be in a binbag with a zebra bobble in her hair and a bib?

God.

PommePoire · 20/07/2010 14:05

X Posts aplenty re: La Portas's love life!

JaceyBee · 20/07/2010 14:05

YANBU, I do exactly the same. Every week I buy it and every week it makes me want to stab my own eyes out.

'bang on trend', 'luxe', 'OTM', just some of the teeth-grindingly irritating phrases they use.

It insists on being 'aspirational' even though it knows that only 0.01% of it's readership could actually afford any of the stuff in there.

That article about the 'beautiful' (and therefore superior) family was gobsmacking.

And the Party People pages, about stupid vacuous idiots that you've never heard of all getting pissed on Cristal and licking each others bums.

Have you ever even heard of these nobheads? Leigh Lezark? Ben Grimes? Jacquetta Wheeler? Rosie Huntington-Whitely? Pah, Rosie Cuntington-Shiteley more like!

And Mary Portas is in it every week coz she's married to Melanie Rickey, one of the Editors. Nepotism. She's rubbish.

ILovePonyo · 20/07/2010 14:06

Shocking superv1xen!

I bloody love Glamour I do

overthemill · 20/07/2010 14:06

its the fashion editor. I buy it for weeks on end then it makes me feel sick and then a few months later (like today) in a weak moment I buy it again and then I'm hooked - I do love to know what Jennifer and Katie are up to ...do?...

SparkyMalarky · 20/07/2010 14:11

I subscribe to Grazia and completely agree with OP

All this colour POP and 'fashion forward' - I actually never look at the fashion 'story' since I can guarantee I am about 5 stone too heavy and nearly 10 years too old to wear it.

Most of their celeb stories turn out to be crap (and I couldn't give a toss about Lady Gaga who is their current favourite).

Even though they're trying to move into more serious articles (today it's all about Mrs Big - the new career woman) I disagree with most of what they say. And yes, that beautiful woman and her child annoyed the tits off me.

Yet still, I'm pleased when it lands on my doorstep each week - what is wrong with me?!

Actually, I don't mind Red or Easy Living with its cupcakes and bunting - but then I quite fancy that life really - I've been known to buy Country Living too .

Maybe we need a Mumsnet mag?

superv1xen · 20/07/2010 14:13

PMSL at "rosie-cuntington-shitely" !!!

mrsshackleton · 20/07/2010 14:16

At least Observer Woman is no more, it was always running articles about Grazia and how faaabulous and cutting edge it was to print pictures of three slebs and expensive clothes every week

MayorNaze · 20/07/2010 14:16

i cannot find a mag that is either aimed t the under 25s and shagging about OR the over 50s and menopausal

red is the best of a bad bunch IMO

SparkyMalarky · 20/07/2010 14:16

Didn't Lowri Turner used to present DIY SOS? does that qualify you as a social commentator/nutritionist?

ILovePonyo · 20/07/2010 14:18

Ooh Country Living eh, might give that a go so I can day dream about having a lovely posh home in the country surrounded by fields and horses

I am also very fond of the recipes in Easy Living, some good stuff there!

tanmu82 · 20/07/2010 14:46

I feel exactly the same OP - in fact, I have resisted buying it for about a month now precisely because of that. It really annoys me that they put a small artcile in their top 10 stories about a real life issue such as poverty, child traficking, anorexia etc... and then on the next page (and all the previous ones too) they have some petty story about a too thin celeb.

That issue with the story about the supposedly 'beautiful' family was the last one I bought. Horrificly vain people that they were.

I can never afford the clothes they feature (not to mention prob wouldn't fit in any of it, despite being slim) and more to the point don't actually 'get' a lot of the trends or current sleb fave's. I also find that, being pregnant, I have even less in common with the stuff I read than ever before.....

tanmu82 · 20/07/2010 14:52

oh, and don't get me started on Lowri Turner.....

JaceyBee · 20/07/2010 15:08

yes Lowri Turner, for example, is a twat.
