I'm breastfeeding my 15 month old daughter and had a night out at the weekend. I decided to have few drinks as my mum had her overnight (I dint make a habbit of it iv only been out twice since having my DD) I had about 5 units and felt quite drunk.

I didn't feed her for 12 hours after drinkng to make sure the alcohol was out of my system. But it's been playing on my mind that I had a drink out of a cocktail jug that had been out for everyone to share and I'm terrified It may have been spiked with something. I know this sounds daft because I was drunk but not uncontrollable. I think I'm just making myself feel quirky for having a night out but iv got this huge fear.. Am I being stupid?

At 15months she is not going to starve! You probably weren't spiked and I am sure she is fine . Only a portion of anything toxic enters breastmilk.

I smoked and still breastfed so I have loads to feel guilty for - both dds are doing fine and no allergies or illness.

rupert22 · 20/07/2010 00:43

Am sure she will be fine, and i'm another who smoked and bf and all is healthy and well.

The body systems are very good at filtering.

CoinOperatedGirl · 20/07/2010 00:44

If you were spiked with something you would have felt it long before you breastfed. Don't be daft.

ChippingIn · 20/07/2010 00:44

You are just making yourself feel guilty for having a night out without her and shock horror enjoying yourself!!

It's good for her to spend time with other adults she loves & trusts, to have other bonds.

AND when you sign up to Motherhood you don't automatically sign up to a life of nothing but nappies and nursery rhymes - you are still allowed a life

I have been feeding her still and she seems fine.. The thougt that It may have been spiked didn't enter my mind until after I had fed fed her and I started panicking... I'm a terrible worrier. I wasn't sick.. I didn't collapse.. I wasn't hungover just felt a little less than fresh the next day..

There is recent evidence that not much alcohol enters breastmilk anyway. I wouldn't worry.

thenightwalker · 20/07/2010 00:52

I was worried it might have been spiked with drugs...

That is actually much rarer than the media would have us believe. Extremely unlikely. You didn't black out and lose your memory, did you?

CarmenSanDiego · 20/07/2010 00:57

She'll be fine. Only tiny amounts of alcohol get into the milk and for a 15 month old, the effects will be absolutely minimal. After the first few months, their livers are fairly hardy.

In fact, the main effect researchers noticed of alcohol in milk is that babies won't feed as much, so actually they have a self-protection mechanism right there.

/If/ the drink was spiked, you'd have tasted it or felt some ill effects. Even assuming it was, it would be unlikely to cause any lasting effects in your baby.

Please don't feel guilty for having a night out and actually, 12 hours is quite a long time to wait. Alcohol circulates in your milk like in blood. If you don't feel drunk, you are safe to feed. And remember, people used to give babies brandy and so on to help them sleep, which would be infinitely more than the fractional amount she'll get from the milk. Not advisable but most babies survived it!

Is it because you were feeling drunk that you think your drink was spiked? Don't forget you haven't been drinking for over two years now so your tolerance to it is lower. A small amount is bound to make you feel dizzy. I used to drink e every one under the table, now I tiddly after a couple of glasses.

Thanks Carmen for that link. It was of interest to me too. (My nickname may give why away!).
