Pasta 'salad'

PuraVida · 16/07/2010 14:02

AIBU to think that a salad should contain more than one of the following: some kind of leaves, tomato, cucumber, celery, sweetcorn, avacoado, even bloody carrot or figs.

Bunging some tomatos in with cold pasta, chicken, bacon, tomato and mayo does not make it a salad. It is a cold dish of pasta.

How am i ever going to lose weight when i can't buy a freaking salad?

and no, i can't make my own to take to work, i live 15 miles from the nearest shop and by the end of the week the fresh stuff is either eaten or no longer fresh.

thta all

YABU ive lost 4 stones without the aid of salads and yes smug because it is bloody hard work

mumofthreesweeties · 16/07/2010 14:06

so when buying your salad at work just buy fresh salad, have some dressing on your desk and hey presto..... thats what I do and have lost 22lbs so far

Colliecross · 16/07/2010 14:08

Grow some salad? Rocket, lettuce, radishes, mange tout all very easy in tubs.

FindingMyMojo · 16/07/2010 14:08

I'm crazy for coleslaw at the moment. Not really a salad either - lots of veggies but too too much mayo.
M&S Deli coleslaw - 350 cals per 100 gms.
Bloody lovely though.
Largel dollop on top of leaves.

next week just the leaves - OK?

duplotogo · 16/07/2010 14:11

If you are talking about buying ready things for lunches, I like those innocent veg pots or soup. I agree that most pasta salads are ridiculously hi-cal and lo-nutrient!

Otherwise I'm afraid you mostly do need to make your own. Are you away from home all week?

I put tomato, cucumber, pepper, spring onions, sweetcorn, grapes, mushrooms and natural yoghurt in my pasta salads... and the pasta is really a very small percentage

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 16/07/2010 16:17

YABU - make your own!

I've lost over 2 stone without changing what I eat, just how much, and exercising more. Also smug because it was bloody hard work! 4lb to go!

MorrisZapp · 16/07/2010 16:32

Makes no odds. By the time they've put mayo or dressing on, you'd be as well to have chips.

I don't 'get' salad.

I don't need to pour oil over my potatoes to make them tasty, why is it healthy to eat leaves made essentially of crunchy water, then pour oil on them?

I'd rather have a more satisfying calorific equivalent. I don't know of anywhere you can buy naked salad - they all have gunk on them.

Ladyanonymous · 16/07/2010 16:33

Tesco do a little salad lunch tray thing now with bread roll, egg, toms, lettuce

OrmRenewed · 16/07/2010 16:35

i agree. Salad is not cold food. If it was a ham sandwich would be salad. Salad has to have green stuff and preferably some crunch.

differentID · 16/07/2010 16:38

Our market has a little salad bar where you choose what size you want and then choose what to put in there.

there are 3 types of pasta, 2 types of rice, couscous, coleslaw, waldorfy type mix plus all the usual salad veggies, some cheese, some pineapple, dried fruit, some cashew nuts, and 3 types of dressing to choose from if you want it

you choose exactly what you want and it's always really busy and very reasonable. They know my order pretty well now

Sunday veg shop. Salad bags of leaves would keep for Monday and Tuesday. A whole iceberg with a white stem at the bottom (no rusty coloured bits)would do Wednesday and Thursday if it's not cut until it's needed. Friday you could use mixed beans as the base.

Tomato, cucumber, celery, avocado, carrot, green beans, asparagus, peppers or figs should all keep from Sunday to Friday in the fridge.Tinned olives, tuna, sweetcorn, chick peas etc are handy.

It takes more effort and planning to eat healthier food. It does stop fridge raiders wwhen there's no easily grabbable snack though.

asda do prepared basic salads.

I have lost two stone over the last year and am still horrified by the discovery when I began dieting that my favourite tuna and sweetcorn pasta 'salad' from Tesco has over 700 calories in it - more than their ready meal lasagne, FFS.

They're the work of the devil, I tell you
