To leave a negative on ebay?

I've recently brought a kiddy guard gate. Its cost £56 with postage. It was described as used but in box. Its finally arrived but when I opened it its filthy, has biro marks on it, is discoloured, the plastic tabs at the top edge of the fabric are both bent back, its really smokey.

I contacted the seller who has sent a short note well if you're not happy return it but they will only refund the item so I'll be £20 out of pocket for the postage each way. Since I brought it they've received another negative with almost the same issue re a cot.

Its been a negative experience and I'm going to be out of pocket for it. In many hundreds of transactions I've never left a neutral let alone a negative and don't want to be consumed by guilt - Is this what negatives are for?

Contact ebay and paypal.

Aren't they cheaper than £56 to buy new?

ANTagony · 15/07/2010 18:21

The cheapest I could find new was £68 delivered.

Its one of the retractable ones for a weird staircase where there is no wall space for a gate to open onto.

yes leave a negative.

Report to Paypal as significantly not as described. You will have to pay return postage, put you will get the £56 back.
Make sure you send recorded though, as the seller could be crafty and say it never turned up.

I guess it depends how it was described in the advert.

If it said 'in excellent condition' (or some such) I would email them with the solution I was looking for (what do you want? Full refund with them paying postage to return it? A discount?).

Do not threaten to leave them a negative if they don't do it. See how they respond.

If, however, it doesn't say anything about the condition it is in, then you really aren't in much of a position to complain are you. You should have asked if their home was smoke free, if it was marked, discoloured etc if all it said was 'used but in box'

I HATE getting anything smokey and having learnt my lesson the hard way, always make sure I ask. However, if you keep this, by the time you have given it a good scrub and let some air to it, it should be fine - throw the box & packaging out, as that's where the smell will linger.

Hope you get it sorted out.

yes leave a negative

personally id do as above, throw away packaging, give it a good old scrub and dry it outside...

if its too bad for that contact paypal and get it sent back... you can get couriers to do it for about £7ish

lovechoc · 15/07/2010 19:11

I'd leave a negative too.

Personally I wouldn't use Ebay, the cost of p&p sort of puts me off.

Deffo do it thru paypal. It's worth it for the postage costs back.

i would leave a negative but be truthful but not nasty/over critical about the item. also i agree if it didnt state what kind of condition it was in on the ebay ad then they can send what they like in whatever condition they like unfortunately!

i bought a pair of lelly kelly shoes my DD was going on about from a seller on ebay. i paid about £20 and they were described as used but in excellent condition. when they arrived they were filthy and had what appeared to be poo on the sole of one of them. i left a negative and got a VERY snotty email back from the seller along the lines of 'if you want perfect buy new and dont be so cheap!!' i replied with the exact condition and sent photos of the poo-like substance on the shoe and advised her if she contacted me on my personal email i will report her for harrassment/email abuse to ebay. she was sending emails to my personal email account direct from her which is against ebay rules AFAIK so i forwarded her snotty response to ebay aswell.
