To think that Learner drivers shouldn't be allowed on the roads during rush hour...

.... at least until they know how to get into 3rd gear!!

I am sick of being stuck in a row of traffic behind a learner driver doing 15 MPH. I KNOW they have as much right to be on the roads ...but it drives me nuts - especially when you get caught behind 3 on one journey which means it takes you 40 minutes to get somewhere when it should only take 20 grrrrr

YABVVU!

I suppose you are one of these really lucky people who just got in a car and drove from the word go with no nerves or mistakes and never went a little slow or mildly incovienienced anyone for what all of 30 seconds!

While we are at it lets ban children who are just learning to walk in public - if you get stuck behind one of them god they are soooo slow.

Lets ban people learning to ride bikes from public parks - i hate having to jump out of the way.

Lets ban my next door neighbour from teaching her daughter to make cakes - the smell from the burning wafts in my window, most annoying.

In fact lets just ban anyone learning anything because it can be abit annoying and frustrating to watch for those that already know how!

It can be a bit frustrating in rush hour, when the learners clearly are at the start of their lesson schemes - and especially if you?re on a single lane road and can?t overtake. My road is on the test route, and I get approximately 6-10 learners a day using my car for reverse parking practise or on the actual test. Sometimes my car is one of the only ones on the street, whilst I?m on maternity leave, so it?s a prime target. I do admit (pre DS) to getting really hacked off one day when it was one after another, and just as one learner pulled up alongside my car to start to reverse, I jumped out of my house, got in my car and drove off, leaving them in the middle of the road. I did feel guilty afterwards, though, as someone else said - I was a learner once too!!

If the OP didn't want MN to get it's collective knickers in a twist she should have put the bit about being able to get out of 3rd gear in the title. Leaving it out is just a ploy to make her thread seem more contentious and get more people to click....

capricorn76 · 15/07/2010 18:35

I failed my test because of two men in a white van who were angry because I was taking too long (for them) to enter a roundabout. They got really close behind me and were shouting stuff like 'hurry up, we haven't got all day'. I got really nervous and shot out in front of another car but luckily the instructor braked but I failed

OgreRebel · 15/07/2010 18:40

I say this with the greatest love, respect and admiration: bugger off.

I am learning and you know what I can use 3rd (and 4th), I am competent enough to drive in rush hour but don't suppose for a second that I'm not able to see you sighing and tutting and eye rolling at me for having the temerity to drive down a road you wish to use.

I have had people gesticulate rudely at me (doing 50 in a 50 area, not fast enough apparently), been audibly sworn at (stopping at an orange light, should have put my foot down apparently) and generally tailgated, huffed and tutted at just for appearing on the road. DH also notes that when he drives our car with the l plates still on (he's not a learner at all, is teaching me), people deliberately push him down the road, gesticulate at him and behave in ways they wouldn't otherwise.

Their need to learn to drive safely is greater than your need to shave a few minutes off your commute.

YANBU
It would make sense for learners to go out at quiet times when they are first starting to learn. They're only going to get intimidated by drivers like the OP during rush hour.

Nemofish · 15/07/2010 19:08

Parhaps you are not being unreasonable, but that's not the way it works and it's tough.

I would like every fucker else to not use their car when I go out driving, but unfortunately they are quite entitled to.

And I was great at 3rd and even 4th gear, until I got out into real traffic and shat myself. (not literally) (well just the once)

Learners have to get used to it somehow. And where are you going that's so damn urgent? If learner drivers are adding 20 minutes (20 minutes? really?) then I would consider changing your route, or overtaking when it is safe to do so.

SomeGuy · 15/07/2010 19:34

I think cars shouldn't be allowed on the road at rush hour, they keep getting in the way of my bike.

thekidsmom · 15/07/2010 19:41

As a mother with two learner drivers in the house (DS taking test for the 2md time tomorrow and DD just started - about 8 lessons so far) just let me say I am FED UP TO THE BACK TEETH of other drivers cutting up, tailgating and generally bullying my kids while they're out driving.

You should remember, OP, that learners are not allowed by their instructors to go above the speed limit - that's usually the problem we're causing - the number of people who overtake when the kids are already doing the speed limit beggars belief.

And if you never practice in traffic, you never learn anything.

So, yes, YAB ridiculously U

Nemofish · 15/07/2010 20:05

yy the dramatic reactions I have had from other drivers cos I have to do 30mph in a 30mph zone!!!

LittleSilver · 15/07/2010 20:11

YABU. And rather horrible. Weren't you a learner once?

I used to wear P plates until I took them off one day and realised I was far safer as people didn't automatically spot them and immediately race to overtake then cut me up. Twats.

Manda25 · 15/07/2010 22:39

I didn't put the bit about getting into 3rd gear because i didn't think it would fit

I never said i got angry to the point that i cut up / tail gated / swore at ...learner drivers (i also have a child in the car with me - so would never drive aggressively or swear)

And i am NOT complaining about learner drivers driving at 30 MPH - if they did that i'd be more then happy!!

wish people would read posts before posting their witty comments ....and learner can get plenty of practice of driving in traffic with out it being in rush hour - especially when they have only learnt how to get into 2nd gear!.

Where I live the roads are pretty quiet, 'residential', wide, not many parked cars and straight-ish. So every driving school in the area makes a beeline for us! It's OK.. I don't mind waiting for another person to complete their three point turn. However, I really do wish they wouldn't pull emergency stops right outside the house. The squeal of brakes often has me running outside to see who has been killed....

YANBU I don't think. And if you want to send your 15mph students round to my street until they can change into 3rd gear, be my guest.

LittleSilver · 16/07/2010 06:13

GiddyPickle, yes, just wish it hadn't taken me 3 months to realise that!

DontCallMeBaby · 16/07/2010 08:14

I don't think I've ever seen a learner driver around here in the morning rush hour, and I'm in the happy position of almost never driving in the afternoon one ... but even on relatively quiet roads I see the occasional learner who really could have done with a few more lessons in car parks or REALLY quiet roads before venturing out. And yes, I give them plenty of room, for much the same utterly self-interested reasons I give horses plenty of room.

I same more irritation for people who do the whole of the nearest stretch of A road at 40mph (it varies between 30 and 50, with very little actually at 40). Mind you I also think it should be illegal to drive while wearing a hat, so my opinion is probably not to be trusted.
