for shouting at a woman for letting her nasty dogs bite my pup?

Hi
I have a five month old beautiful bichon/shih tzu puppy. My DH and I take him to the park every day and since we mastered the recall we let him off the lead when we're away from the footpaths and roads. Today (thank God) we kept him on the lead and walking along happily when four greyhounds came running over to him. Two had muzzles but when they got to us the two that didn;t were baring teeth and one tried to bite his back. My DH jumped down and picked him up high so they couldn't get to him. At which point the owner came ambling over and snapped at us! She said that picking our dog up would make him nervous with other dogs and when I shouted that we weren't going to just let her dog bite ours she replied that he was only sniffing our dog! I've never heard of sniffing with teeth but maybe I'm just ignorant in these things!
The day before pretty much the same thing happened when a huge boxer came running at him. My pup loves playing with other dogs but these big ones that snarl and bare teeth scare the crap out of him (unsurprisingly). She also snapped at me saying her dog is playful and fine with small dogs. When my dog plays with others either I've asked the owner if its ok or they ask me. It's called common courtesy. We don't know each others dogs and it's responsible to ask first.
I'm not going back there again. I'll walk him around the village instead from now on and take him to a much nicer park further away at the weekends. Why do some people have to ruin things for others? I am so angry!

YA SOOOO NBU. You were protecting your pup from a perceived threat. Other owner is irresponsible and has no right to judge/comment on your actions.

OOh ! another dog on/off lead thread. [Runs away]

Oh you poor thing. I'd be furious.

I just needed to vent which mumsnet is great for.

Does anyone out there know the best thing to do in that situation? She shouted over that I should just hold them back but I don't fancy getting bitten.

My JRT puppy (just 3 months and very tiny) was chased by four huge rottweilers. I didn't pick her up as I been told it makes them nervous (though I don't think I would have caught her as she was off lead).

She was so terrified she swma into the middle of the busy Thames to get away from them. Eventually the owners of the rottweilers got them away from the riverbank and she swam back to me. I thought she was going to swim to the other side and then I would have probably lost her forever.

She is now terrified of any big dogs!

So pick her up if you want to!

YADNBU. Most adopted greyhounds are fine but some do still have the instinct to chase after small fluffy things and new owners should be aware/made aware of this. We have a Westie so he is very appealing to some!

YANBU though i was told not to pick a dog up but its natural to want to protect your pup

i would be so angry and shook up dont other dog owners realise a few bad experiences when young can really make a dog nervous

not much advice really but just to let you no you are quiet right in your opinion
