To give my toddlers Tesco Value pizza for a meal?

ok let me explain. I always thought I was good at feeding my kids (3 & 18m) until I started using bloody MN! Now Im convinced they are always high on salt/sugar/additives/sweetners.

Breakfast- Cocoa pops, satsuma, banana, 2x petit filous

Lunch- Jam wholemeal sandwich, chunks of cheese, slices of pepper (dont even mention the pepper situation ) cherry tomatoes, sliced apple

Dinner- Tesco value kids pizza (bought on last best before date and got for 12p), and was going to top with tuna, sweetcorn, peppers and pineapple.

Does that sound ok for todays food? Im scared of the bloody pizza now!

Yes (but you need a big cup of tea to go with it )

Or you can dip celery sticks in it - surprisingly nice.

But then I eat chilli sauce on apple slices...

BettyButterknife · 12/07/2010 15:45

Seems alright.

If you did want to cut down on sugar:
Sainsbury's Kids version of Petit Filous don't contain any added sugar and are £1 for a pack of 6 (I think) if you're that worried.

St Dalfour make a 'fruit spread' ie jam which is sweetened with grape juice rather than refined sugar, again if you wanted to cut down on that.

The only sugar-free cereal my DS will eat is raisin shredded wheat, which he seems to love, and porridge with the St Dalfour jam, so I won't introduce him to anything more sugary unless I can help it.

I only allow cocopos on a weekend.

Value pizzas as a base is a cracking idea!

Helenastar · 12/07/2010 15:52

All sounds good to me,
I cant believe that you get your kids to eat peppers!! my DD will NOT touch them, even when very heavily disguised in pasta, and she is about the only child I know who doesnt eat coco pops, she will only eat porridge which I am so glad of

monkeyfacegrace · 12/07/2010 16:14

Seroiusly, is the pepper thing that unusual? She will happily munch through half of one per day, either with chicken on skewers, or as part of a 'deli lunch'.
Maybe that erases all trace of the cocoapops brekkie
Thanks for all the ideas though, will look for the special spreads etc.

my dd loves red and yellow peppers, they're lovely and sweet, always thought of them as something all kids would go for!

AppleAndBlackberry · 12/07/2010 20:07

Sounds good to me - I assume your 18mo gets milk at bedtime too?

muggglewump · 12/07/2010 20:11

It's fine. There's no such thing as bad food, just a bad diet.

When I was really broke, I'd buy Asda Smartprice pizzas and then add extra toppings.
Always anchovies and olives, pizza isn't pizza in my house without them!

wahwahwah · 13/07/2010 10:53

Did they survive?

monkeyfacegrace · 13/07/2010 11:02

Just
Though my 3yr old picked off the topping and left the base anyway, wierdo

wahwahwah · 13/07/2010 11:17

Ahhh. Mummy ingredients best then! Some bases are a bit spongey though,

allbie · 13/07/2010 14:30

Generally, I have found that many 'value' products contain less salt and sugar than so-called 'better' products. Read the labels, value doesn't always mean shit.

lottiejenkins · 13/07/2010 15:06

Tesco Value Lasagne is brill, i made the best lasagne ever the oither day with that!

RobynLou · 13/07/2010 18:33

there was a watchdog or somesuch thing a while ago that looked at the ingredients of value versus finest ranges, and most of the value stuff has less additives/sugar etc - they make them cheaper by leaving that stuff out maybe?!?

tuna and pineapple on the SAME pizza?

That is abuse of the tastebuds surely?

jazzchickens · 13/07/2010 20:22

If my two sons had eaten that much fruit & veg when they were so young I would have been putting myself forward for "Mum of the Year" award.

Sounds fine to me and you should stop being so hard on yourself

tassisssss · 13/07/2010 20:24

OP, we buy it as pizza base and let them add their own toppings - peppers, salami, pineapple (which they adore) and extra cheese.

A regular weekend tea here.

jendaisy · 13/07/2010 22:07

Christ alive...dd who is 6 will only eat fish fingers. I made her eat 3 mouthfuls of plain jacket potato today and she threw up after mouthful number two! (we skipped number 3). I'd be over the moon if my dd would eat half the stuff yours will. Don't give yourself a hard time.
