allergies and teeth

My ds 20 months constantly has a blocked /runny nose, and has various mild allergies, just like my dh.

Took ds to the dentist yesterday for the first time and the dentist immediately said that he has plaque on his front teeth due to breathing through his mouth due to his blocked nose. I had seen the plaque on his teeth and was shocked and surprised as I am very strict about tooth brushing .

Anyone else heard of this link?

Hadn't heard of that before but it's very interesting. I had noticed that my DS often seems to have plaque on his teeth - more so than other children - but had never considered that it might be linked to his allergies. Now I will be even more vigilant about brushing.

greenbananas - as parents we blame ourselves for any slight mark on our children's teeth and I was really concerned about the plaque. I was so surprised when the dentist said it was down to allergies.

It's good to know, and I will be telling the allergy clinic what the dentist has said when we finally go there this august.

i am aware that children with all year round rhintus have a high arched palate, caused by the constant post nasal drip.

will also have a line on top of nose, called a captains salute, but have never heard that its a cause of tooth decay.

but, makes sense, its nice to be aware of it, thanks.
