6YO having skin reaction to "outside"- no previous allergies- what can this be?

Hello, I'm new to this topic because until now I have been lucky enough not to encounter allergic symptoms in my children.

But for the last two months DD has increasingly had episodes of spots on her arms and face. They look like nettle stings at first, raised white circles with pink around the base, but when she scratches (they itch like mad) they "run" into each other, lose the circular form and can become quite large (she had one the size of a 50p piece on her arm the other day). Piriteze seems to make them go away and eases the itching.

My suspicion is that this is some kind of grass/ pollen reaction (she has been out in the garden most days this week and the reaction has increased accordingly). But she doesn't suffer from hayfever symptoms and has never showed any kind of skin sensitivity or allergy before. Also, she only seems to get the spots on her arms, face and neck, despite having been out in shorts and bare feet.

Does anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences? I'm planning to take her to the doc in the week but would be really interested in your views. In particular, can these things just develop at age 6 and could it be dangerous?

My DD had the same but she was younger around 3 years old. It only came out on areas that were exposed, hands, ankles, face etc. It didnt seem to bother her and it went away when we were indoors or if we used the much hated rain cover on a pushchair.

Took her to the GP who said it was an allergy but he didn't know what to and said he didn't want to test DD just yet. It lasted a few months and then stopped as quickly as it started and she is now 11 and hasn't had it again.

allergy. my dd had it. piriteze sorted it.

she's generally hay feverish during june/july and this was at the same sort of time.

Thanks to you both. So it's possible to have the skin reaction without the rhinitis?

yes it is my ds had this once walking from house to car and by the time we had reached the CM was covered in nettle rash.

He does have 'allergies' to some products which contain tomato (ketchup,(some) pizza, S& sauce) but doesn't have a tomato allergy.

Paed Cons said he has contact allergy to something but not sure.

I carry allerief with me. School has a bottle but they will only accept it if prescribed so I think a trip to the GP is a good idea.

best of luck

Yes DD had nothing else except the spots and they got worse the longer we were out in the fresh air, they didnt bother her at all.

it can also be from caterpillas in trees. We get one round here, it has brown bristly fur, and these bristles fly about and cause skin irritation. Pollen does not cause skin probs in my experience.

But I agree the Priton/Piriteze syrup is great, quite apart from hayfever snout and itchy eyes, it also stops gnat bites getting swollen and itchy. If it solves your problem, I'd stick with it.

Thanks everyone, that has been really helpful. No spots today despite sports day practice in the school field. Maybe the season for whatever it is is limited?

Could also possibly be Cold Urticaria. I developed this suddenly aged about 17, waiting outside for a lift to work one day. I got referred to Harley Street and Guys/St Thomas' for blood tests and to see a specialist who diagnosed me with the cold form of Urticaria.

No explanation for it aparently - I was told one day it will just go as quickly as it came. I can't remember the last time it flared up. HTH

I get simliar sounding little spots on my fingers on the backs of hands after sun/heat exposure. Gets itchy then goes away. Never get these spots anywhere else. Started when I was a teenager.

I think it's the sun that causes it but no-one really knows. It really doesnt bother me apart from the slight discomfort of itch.
