Weird reaction to fruit?

DD2 is BLW at the moment. I've tried her with pears, mango, melon and apples so far as well as banana. I haven't given apples in a while because I think they aggravated her reflux so I can't remember if they have this effect too or not, but with pears, mango and melon her breathing immediately sounds congested and husky and her eye starts watering.

Is this a food reaction or is it more likely that she is biting off big bits and swallowing them, making her eyes water? I just thought it's unusual that babies react to fruit. She has been intolerant to dairy, soy, nuts, egg & wheat in my diet BTW (EBF).

i would stop giving your kid the fruit, are you sure your child is intolerant? or allergic?

YOU need to know the difference.

ask your gp for a refferal to a pead immunologist, and /or nearest allergy clinic.

CarGirl · 07/06/2010 22:53

it could be oral allergy syndrome which is linked to silver birch tree proteins

CarGirl · 07/06/2010 22:54

and other pollens, different pollens different fruit reactions

ooh interesting cargirl. Who would have thought? We don't have much silver birch round here at all but plenty of rapeseed. But then with allergies it doesn't take much, does it? Will ask my GP about this.

i did think about OAS, but doenst it normally appear in older children? cargirl?

still think advice to get reffered is important, due to the symptoms you mention.

I phoned GP duty doctor today and was told to get in touch with the paediatric dietician we are under at the hospital. They never return phone calls, but GP is leaving a note too so I hope to hear from them soon. If that is a dead end I'll make a GP appointment and ask about allergists. I think we'll avoid fruit for a bit anyway but perhaps film her reaction in case it's useful?

No idea bridewolf I developed it when pregnant with dc3, I was told to not eat any of the fruit I was allergic to which I promptly ignored after 3 months of virtually only eating melon! Fortunately the symptoms did lesson after she was born and only rarely bother me know but then again I'm constantly popping on antihistamines but go by the exposure lessening reaction approach of desensitisation.

bridewolf · 09/06/2010 16:47

i am aware that OAS can be mild for a great number of people, but also has the potential to be severe.
a immunologist is the best person to get to grips with this, esp in a child.

have heard that younger children are developing OAS, but not babies, but of course is entirely possible, nothing would surprise me with allergies these days.......

hobnob57 · 09/06/2010 21:30

I spoke to the dietician and she wants me to check that it's not just a reaction to a certain texture of food in her mouth, so I've to try steamed fruit mixed with rice. She seems to think that repeated exposure would be more likely to desensitise her rather than be harmful.

If it's OAS she shouldn't have a response to cooked fruit - it denatures the pollen-similar proteins which cause the allergic response.

I have this allergy and in my case it is linked with silver birch. I can eat the fruit when it has been cooked and have been advised to steer clear of the fruit when it is raw. Cherries kiwi and apple give me the worst reaction.

CarGirl · 10/06/2010 20:54

I found bizarrely that I react less with organic fruit -makes no sense as it's the protein in the fruit that I'm allergic too! I sometimes still get the itchy mouth thing but it's not as bad as when I was pregnant (thankfully)
