HELP - HAYFEVER ADVICE NEEDED

13 replies

craziedaisy · 20/05/2010 20:14

I am wondering if anyone can offer me any advice please. My 3 year was diagnosed with very sever hayfever last summer. He had a rotten time and spent the biggest part of the summer indoors as the antihisitimines precribed failed to stop his symptoms completely.

We have always been a very outdoors sort of family and live in the middle of the countryside so as you can imagine has been very difficult for all of us.

Over the last few days he has started to show signs of suffering again and I am bgining to dread the next couple of months. I would love to hear from anyone who has had similar problems and had any success stories with medication etc. I would consider spending time abroad in the summer months if this would help. I just want him to have a normal happy summer.

Many thanks

I have taken pollen tablets for hay fever for the past 4 years. It has made my symptoms far better. I'm pretty sure they are suitable for children though it would be worth checking before buying.

It's best if local tablets are taken as pollen varies in different areas. The ones that I have used are www.medibee.co.uk/pollen-capsules.php

Failing that a break to somewhere not particularly pollen filled could be a good idea such as the south coast of France.

Hope this helps!

Is your LO under a paediatric allergy specialist? They would be able to give more advice?

I've had hayfever for years, and sadly dread this time of year - I've been taking my hayfever meds now for about a month and will probably stop mid September. However, a stint overseas especially by the sea always puts a stop to it.

Also, the worst time of day is evening time when all the pollen is 'settling' down, so that's the best time to be indoors... ggrrr..

HTH...

My DD1 is now 5.5yrs and has suffered severe hayfever for the last 3 years. She starts at the end of Feb and it goes on until the end of Sept. Last year I got so fed up with her being on prescription antihistamines all day every day I resorted to a homeopath that had been recommended to me. Within a week she was off all prescription drugs and looking much better although still a bit congested (her eczema flares up when she has hayfever). She went the rest of the summer with much better skin and just slightly congested.

This year I went to the homeopath as soon as it started in Feb, her skin is great she has no congestion and she hasn't had a single dose of anti histamine.

I know a lot of people think it's a bit whacky, and I was very sceptical at first but I got desperate and it paid off. I now take DD2 and myself and she sorts everything for us.

Yes homeopathy works brilliantly on kids despite all the bad press it gets in the media.

Mine has numerous allergies and has had homeopathy to treat his eczema. I am also as vigilant as I can be with his diet.Avoid dairy in particular and you can also give a supplement of Vit B5. I would see a naturopathic nutritionist however before embarking on the supplements.

As dairy and wheat/wheat products are the two main culprits in our western based diet then ditching them would be a good start. There are plenty of alternatives out there now in the supermarkets and you will be amazed at how many new foods you end up trying out and loving.

Thank you all for your advice. There are lots of different things to try. My GP has prescribed Loratadine but I have read the possible side effects and i am a bit worried about giving it to him. Has anyone else giving it to a child so young? Also will this mean he can then do normal play outside? At the moment he is cooped up indoors which is so unfair.

hi
I'm 12 weeks 4 days pregnant.Hay fever started affecting me a few weeks back.I went to the Pharmacist.She gave me Loratadine.Then said she's not sure if I can take it coz Im pregnant.I should see a GP.I went to a GP.he gave me another antihistamine.Now that the pollen count is high,its affecting me even indoors.I can't concentrate on anything!Went to the GP again today coz even that antihistamine is not helping anymore.It was a new doctor.He opened a book and said that during pregnancy NO antihistamine is safe to take!and said I should just live with it and suffer for 3 months to keep my baby safe!
It doesn't end here.Just now on NHS's website, i read that Loratadine and few other antihistamines r safe during pregnancy!I'm soo confused!can someone please suggest something.some home remedies..anything!!
thanks

My consultant told me it was fine to take piriton when pregnant and I did for my last 3 pregnancies. Unfortunately not all anti histamines work well for all people though.

anniethenannie · 15/06/2010 10:11

there is a company in Wadhurst called Hamblys herbalist which do a natural product for hayfever called Eyebright compound. there website is www.hamblys.net. It is brilliant for hayfever and great for children as it is totally natural and non drowsy. give them a ring and ask if it is suitable for under 5's but I'm almost certain it is

laziness · 15/06/2010 15:35

thanks Cargirl. I will wait for a few days as my second trimester starts in 3 days.then go back to the doctor and ask him if piriton is okay.as whoever i talk to, says its very risky to suggest any medication during early pregnancy.so maybe if i go in my second trimester, the doc would give me some medicine!

I take allicin for hay fever and it works well. You have to have good quality stuff but it's worth it. I find a natural remedy instead of synthesized ones works better for me.

I have just read that Fresh Pineapple is one of the best effective natural remedies for hayfever. Due to the natural enzyme Bromelain. Have a look here;

www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1R2GGLL_en&&sa=X&ei=Y2YfTIK6F-CV4gb9tYSSDg&ved=0CB0QBSg A&q=hay+fever+pineapple&spell=1

I have started giving my 3year old fresh pineapple on a daily basis now to see if it will help with the hayfever. Just hope it will kick in quickly..

AlCrowley · 21/06/2010 14:25

Oooh, I've been suffering cause I'm breastfeeding but I love pineapple...
