nappy barrier cream

My baby (14months) suffers from excema, particularly in her nappy area. We have used Mothercare's zinc and castor oil barrier cream since she was newborn as it seems to be the only cream that works as a barrier and that she doesn't react to and it has just a few ingredients. However, Mothercare have unfortunately recently changed this cream so that it has many more ingredients now, including parabens (which we do not wish to use on her skin and actually before we knew that the cream had changed ingredients we used it once and her skin did react).
We are desperately searching for a new zinc and castor oil barrier cream for her before our last pot runs out (it is proving hard to find a cream that doesn't have peanut oil in it-which due to her excema we are avoiding). Does anyone know of any suitable creams?

How about sudocreme? That's zinc.

lukewarmcupoftea · 16/05/2010 14:06

No no, not sudocrem, has lanolin in it which makes most eczema worse.

We use bepanthan. For some reason dd1, who is allergic to everything (including parabens etc), is fine with that. No idea why, and don't know about the peanut oil, but worth having a look.

I know, but my DD (and me actually) has eczema and a problem with lanolin - but have been okay with sudocrem.

My DS and I have eczema and we hate sudocrem-it literally makes him scream until I clean it off.

Boots do a zinc and castor oil cream. Or have you tried metanium?

We use Neals Yard Nappy Barrier cream, it's pricey but lasts ages and is fantastic - no nasty ingredients and DS has never had any nappy rash at all.
We also use Waitrose Bum Butter when we're out as it's a smaller tub to carry around - only a few natural ingredients and very reasonably priced.
Good luck! HTH

Bepanthan is the only thing my DS can tolerate. Anything else, even the mothercare cream will cause him to get nappy rash and a flare up of eczema.

Hello to all hope I can give you some advice(this is a post I have on another thread, and I just thught Id share it with you
My DD8 has very fair skin and has terrible reactions to suncream, it took me ages to discover what was causing her rashes....long story short was advised by a lovely older couple on holiday one year that Waterproof
suncream is the cause of the reaction it blocks pores and then your skin is not able to sweat(as required) to cool down ...
so now we can use any suncream any make just as long as it has no Waterproof ingredient in it
worth a wee go on a small part of skin first just in case.
lso check out what shampoo and bath stuff you use ...mostly all use Sodium Laurel/Laureth Sulphates, which are used as a foaming agent(also used to strip engines of oli and muck and it is in nearly every soap and even in toothpaste,
if your little one and even your own skin reacts try some great stuff from boots called Naked, bath /shower/shampoo etc it is SUPER...DD15(who suffered exema as a baby) swears by it as her skin breaks out with "normal shampoo and shower gel"
do some googling on Sodium Laurel Sulphates parafin, parabens..horrid stuff(and its in baby bath and all supposedly other gentle shampoos etc )
good luck
