Littke DD was taken to hospital last night with violent vomiting - no idea what happened...

Hey all

Yesterday afternoon 2 hours after her lunch, DD (7 months) started vomiting really bad, and just wouldn't stop, even after her stomach was empty, she would still try to vomit again and started being lethargic - no rash or anything else though. It was so hard to see her being in such pain!

I called NHS Direct who sent an ambulance, and we stayed in hospital until 8pm, where DD was given demineralised water every 5 min. After which she was much better and herself again, so we went home.

The doctors had no idea what happened, they said it looked like an allergic reaction, but to what? That day she only had green peas and carrot puree (with sunflower oil), which she already had before and was just fine, and breastmilk.

DD is allergic to dairy, eggs and wheat, but previously when she had vomited dairy she had a bad rash, and it only lasted 10 min, not 1.5 hour....

Any suggestion on what might have happened?
Doctors didn't think she had caught a stomach bug as she was just fine a few hours later... Maybe too much sunflower oil?? or problem with the food that was homemade but unfrozen??

so so confused...

How horrible for you both! Is she fully recovered?

My DS, when he was about 16 months, had a very similar sort of thing one night, never properly explained. Nhs direct sent an ambulance but he wasn't actually admitted. He has lots of food allergies, and I am sure in my own mind that he was reacting to mint flavouring in my breastmilk (shamefully, I had eaten nearly a whole box of mint sweets). I've not touched mint since and it's not happened again.

As I understand it, allergic reactions happen on the second exposure, not the first. Had she eaten peas and carrots more than twice? I think peas and lentils are fairly common allergens (my DS also reacts to these and I've read other posts by Mners whose LOs react to peas and lentils).

Sorry, no advice, but sending love and hugs to you all. Its awful when little kids are poorly.

My DD is very allergic to peas as well as lentils and beans - all members of the legume family, related to peanut. All present with a rash though, before the vomiting starts...
Peas are not an uncommon allergen.
Hope your DD is feeling better.

Thanks all!
She's much better but quite cranky still, and we've had terrible nights since it happened.

Wow I didn't know it was on the second exposure that the allergy shows... It would make sense for her dairy allergy though.

She's had peas (and carrots obviously) quite a few times... I was suspecting the curry I had eaten that day (I'm breastfeeding), as she was very whingy yesterday too after I had curry again. But I had curry so many times before we started solids and she had never protested, as far as I'm aware.

She had skin prick tests about 2 weeks ago, but only dairy, eggs and wheat showed up.

It's so confusing! I really hate this trial & error process, it's so not fair on small babies!
