Hi there,
I have also posted this in Chat, just didnt know where Id get the best response.
Just wondering of experiences any Coeliacs may have had with curry takeaways?
As I know traditionally the curry sauce recipes don't contain wheat/gluten, and the store bought curries are always safe. But I am always nervous about ordering from a curry takeaway 'just in case'. I have tried asking over the phone but they didn't really understand what I was asking. Do you think it would be ok to get say a Chicken Korma from a takeaway? I can't see why they would contain wheat.
Thanks in advance!

I am coeliac. Curry and all spicey food gives me bad acid reflux as I also had my gall bladder out.

Curry sauces though may often contain yoghurt that has lactose in. Coeliacs are commonly lactose intolerant. Also there may be thickeners in shop bought sauces that contain gluten. Naan bread of course is made of wheat. Onion bahji has batter on made out of wheat.

Chicken Korma has yoghurt in so has lactose.

Son (7yrs) Coeliac - have always spoken to a chef when ordering and my DS has been alright. Check the Bhajis my local one makes them with pure gram flour which is OK but lots dont. Amazingly my local takeaway the doner kebab meat it GF as well

Have you been in touch with your local group - they publish a list of local eateries which cater for coeliacs.

I've never had a problem with a curry - bhajis and pakoras are more problematic, so I don't have those out.

Unless you can verify the ingredients with the chef, I would avoid takeaways. I find that cheaper foods seem to have more wheat and barley malt in (possibly to improve texture/flavour) and having worked in catering, I know that a lot of this type of food is of lower quality.

My husband is coealiac and is generally fine with our local curry takeaway - just doesn't have a naan. However, always check store bought curries as some of them do contain gluten - have certainly seen some in Sainsburys recently which he can't eat.

Hi recently been diagnosed with coealiac, and not sure what foods to avoid.. at the moment absolutely nothing is agreeing with me and can't hold down anything. I know I have to avoid bread cereal pasta.. but what else should I avoid or will I be stuck to the vegetarian section for the rest of my days 😷 Somebody helpppp!

Hi Megan

If you start your own thread you will get more replies

If you've been diagnosed here in the uk you will be referred to a dietitian for advice, until then take a look at coeliac uk who are excellent at supporting those newly diagnosed

Vegetarian food is not gluten free, most uk supermarkets have a free from section where you can get gluten free staples like pasta and bread

Potato and rice are naturally gluten free, it hard at first but you will quickly adapt

Pinterest has loads of gluten free stuff to get you started there are a couple of gf magazines available too

WiseDad · 24/09/2017 19:58

Try not to eat too much potato or rice as they are very starchy. Veg is great in quantity and healthier. The GF ingredients are useful and a bit more expensive than ordinary but you can do much with them. Asda have GF cornflakes for example and Dovesfarm GF flour range is excellent but pick up some xanthan gum at the same time.

Also think Indian food as above (if you cook it yourself) which is almost all GF. I cook more than I used to and in bigger quantities to freeze some.

After a while you don't miss anything, except beer over the summer when a cold pint would have been wonderful.
