Growing out of CMP allergy

Hi there
Would be really interested to hear about anyone's experience of their child growing out of their CMP allergy.
My ds is nearly 18 months and has many many allergies and intollerances (sigh!!) but seems to be becoming less sensitive to cmp than he was. He used to come out in hives if he had anything with CMP in and his eyelids and lips would swell up. If he got milk on his skin the area would become covered in hives.
A couple of incidents recently have made me think he is beginning to grow out of it (he had an unsupervised encouter with some cheese and cream to no ill effect (although not sure what he 'tried' if anything)A couple of days ago I dabbed a little milk on his arm and there was no reaction. (WOOHOO!!)
We have an appointment with the allergy consultant in July.
I am so excited at the thought that he might be growing out of this (getting so bored with cooking the same meals!)
Just wondered how long the growing out phase is - before they can eat CMP freely - and what happened really.

Thanks so much

We have just a follow up appointment with our consultant (DD is 13 months and much as you described your DS)

He swears that the majority of children grow out of it around 2. He wants us to try some dairy several times but on separate occasions just after her 2nd birthday.

He has made a repeat appointment for a month after her 2nd birthday to see how she responded.

This doesn't really answer your question, but is as far as we have got!

Ds1 was allergic to CMP from age about 3 months til 3 years. His one exposure to it in this time (age 6 mo) resulted in hives and vomiting. At 10 mo his skin prick test was 3mm (negative) and RAST v. low and he didn't react to cooked food eg cake with a little milk in it, though we stopped giving him these.

He had a milk challenge at age 18mo after another negative skin prick test but failed after a teaspoonful of milk, although with a very mild reaction. I was gutted.

At age 2.8 we tried him with cheese and chocolate (v. small quantities) and he was OK. Just before his third birthday he had another milk challenge and passed.

It does sound like your ds is outgrowing his allergy but you may need to be patient for a little while yet. Ds1 is still allergic to peanut and now developing a celery allergy (age 4) but being able to have milk has really made life easier.

Thanks for your posts!

kidding I heard that 80% of children grow out of their CMP allergy by 2 so fingers crossed!!

wb So glad your ds has grown out of his milk allergy. Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like patience is the way then - I am just so desperate - his diet is so restricted - no milk, soya, peanuts (almonds, walnuts) fish, wheat or eggs (argh!)

Thanks again for responding

Gosh that is awful for you, I find it hard with the milk/dairy/soya

Admittedly I haven't tried nuts or eggs (I hate eggs) but she loves salmon and dairy free fish fingers.

She is also allergic to animal dander/saliva which is a torture here as all of my relatives/friends have dogs or cats. I am hoping she grows out of this too!

stottiecake · 12/05/2010 22:37

Wow! Have not heard of allergy to animal saliva - is she is asthmatic also? Ds (luckily) doesn't appear to be allergic to our cat (although I think the cat has developed an allergy to him ha ha!) He is asthmatic but it is controlled really well now so we don't have much bother with it.

Hi stottiecake - it's Kidding here (I name changed)

She's not asthmatic no (touch wood!) Anything that disagrees with her affects her skin. She had very severe eczema when she was on normal formula - it was everywhere and bled. When she started on the Neocate and we stopped all dairy it cleared up very quickly, she is a completely different baby now.

We knew that dog hair/dander irritated her - she comes out in a rash all over her body, it's very sore for her and she cries and itches with it.

A few weeks ago she was sitting in her Bumbo at my sister's house. My sister's dog got into the room and licked one side of her face - it immediately started turning red with a raised rash, and her eyelid swelled.

Steroid cream works when she gets like this, but it does take a couple of days for her skin to clear again.

misdee · 13/05/2010 09:26

in jan dd4 had a negative result for CMP rast test. which indicated she has outgrown the allergy.

3 weeks ago we had her milk challenge done, and she failed it att he first stage, a dab on her skin

but i think 80% od children outgrow milk allergies by 2-5years.

ThreadKillerQueen · 13/05/2010 09:44

How old is DD misdee?

Avocadoes · 13/05/2010 09:57

DD1 was diagnosed with CMP allergy at 6 months when her first sip of formula resulted in hives, swollen lips and vomitting. By 2.5 years she had pretty much outgrown it. She is now nearly 4 and refuses to eat most dairy. I am not sure whether this is because it makes her feel poorly or because she just hates the taste given she wasn't weaned on it. She does however agree to eat ice cream and chocolate! If she eats alot she gets a small patch of excema around her mouth but that is all .

misdee · 13/05/2010 12:50

18months old now.

stottiecake · 13/05/2010 22:41

Hi Misdee - it's barbareebaa (I name changed!) Sorry your dd has not outgrown her allergy - how frustrating especially when it looked so hopeful What now? How long before they test again?

Threadkiller - your poor dd! So glad you got to the bottom of her eczema. Hopefully she will learn to avoid affectionate doggies (ds always makes a beeline for anything furry/feathery!)Hope she will grow out of it soon.

Avocadoes - Thanks for posting! Glad your dd has grown out of her allergy and is enjoying some treats

Avocadoes, it's really positive to hear some good stories.

I'm sorry too misdee, but she still has time? I'd be interested to know how long you have to leave it for now? What is a rast test? Is that the blood tests?

I fed DD houmous with lemon and coriander yesterday - immediate reaction to her skin. It baffles me. DH said to buy some ordinary houmous and see if she reacts - hopefully it's the lemon or coriander.

We were quite lucky stottie, we managed to work it out quite quickly, I know there are so many families whose children have bad eczema and it doesn't work out like that. Poor DS wants a cat, but he's got next to no chance!

misdee · 14/05/2010 21:43

her milk challenge will be repeated in a years time.

jasperc163 · 17/05/2010 08:20

Misdee - DD1 was fine from about 3.5 yrs. She could tolerate cheese and milk in cooking (though we generally used goats cheese til about 3) from about 2 years but stayed on Neocate til 3.5. She now drinks normal cows milk with no problems.
