How do you know if your child is allergic to strawberries?

Ds1 has some strawberries last night, about 7pm. He said he felt ill very soon afterwards, and kept wanting to be sick, said his stomach hurt a lot.

Eventually he went to bed and at 9.30 was very sick - it was just the strawberries. Then he said his throat hurt, but he had some water then fell asleep and was fine.

I'm concerned in case this might indicate he is intolerant of them or maybe allergic? He has in the past seemed to have the same issue with satsumas, and red pepper.

Sorry if this sounds really dim, I know nothing about allergy and just want to check really as it seems odd he reacted to them like this.

No one else had any though so maybe they were just dodgy.

Thanks for any thoughts.

How old is he?

My ds had a reaction to strawberries when he was 8/9 months old - his whole face went red and spotty.

How many strawberries did he eat? It doesn't sound so much like an allergy but maybe something like irritable bowel syndrome.

But you should see your doctor. And don't give any more strawberries.

Would be an intolerance rather than allergy if sickness was only symptom.
But my dc have both had a bug this week which made them spend one evening throwing up and then fine afterwards, so it could be that - you need more than one incidence to draw the intolerance conclusion.
Suggest leaving it a few days to make sure that he is well, and then giving him strawberries again and seeing if you get the same reaction.

Thankyou, two different sets of advice!

They were best before the 5th but only 3 days out - I selected the non-dodgy looking ones, washed them and threw the rest away. So it could just have been theyw ere a bit past it

Usually if he has a bug, he will be ill several times not just the once...I suppose it could be still but it seemed related to the strawbs iyswim. Me and ds2 so far OK.

I take your point about needing a few instances in order to conclude that he is intolerant. I won't stop him having them again, will just see what happens if he does - but we rarely buy them anyway, so it'll be at someone else's house if he has them.

Hopefully he will be fine, the thing with the pepper and oranges made me wonder though.

Thanks for the ideas.

some people do react to the high histamine in strawberries, so if the were overripe they might cause a problem.
a normal strawberry might not cause a problem.

however, i dont he would fancy any strawberries for a while.........
