hi everyone
my daughter has just been diagnosed with a dairy allergy but will not be haveing blood tests till next week to confirm she has been put on nutramigan 2 has been on this for nearly a week now but is still throwing up it has actually got worse :-( has anyone else experienced this? i dunno wot else to try and why she would still be throwing up on this milk as its hypoallergenic could it be a dairy allergy. she has also tried soya a few months back but was sicky on tht too. shes putting on weight fine and on 2 meals a day which is cooked fruit and veg i just dont know wot to do as the health system takes so long shes been like this since she was 6 weeks old and is now 6 months

is the forumula a fully changed milk, as in total protien stuctures changed, or a partially changed milk?

for intolerance , it can take 6 weeks before things settle due to gut damage.

however if its cows milk protein allergy, a partially changed milk will not be suitable.
a fully changed milk, like neocate, for e.g is preffered.

have you any idea which types of allergy your child has? classic , ige or intolerance?

what are the symptoms.

is the blood test a RAST test?

linz23 · 04/05/2010 13:24

she was on a regular formula cow & gate 2 but has been changed to nutramigan which is a hypoallergenic formula.

her symtoms are constantly being sick and explosive runny green stools shes been like this for 5 months now,
shes haveing her bloods done tuesday comeing they are liver function, full blood count and allergy and urea & electrolytes

obviously i will know more when her bloods come back but i just thought the nutramigan would work as its for dairy allerges, do u know wot it contains tht she could be allergic too i;e does it have soya or anything else in it.

Take your credit card with you if on Neocate. My YS is now on that and thankfully we get it on perscription.

They say it takes 2 weeks for it to get through the system. And the poos are likely to be still vile.

Have you a dietitian to talk to? Try not to keep swopping milk as it won't help your little one's digestive system.

But I know how hard and depressing it is to be sat in pools of vomit all day. I keep thinking it won't be forever.

linz23 · 04/05/2010 15:58

thanx so much for ur responses yes i did know they r both available to buy but luckily we get hers on prescription as there tins r only 400g and 12 pound to buy. we are waiting for an appointment for the dietician, i will hold out on nutramigan as shes not got her blood tests till nxt tuesday so i want to wait till will get a result before swapping again as shes been on a number of formulas for the past 6 months:-(
yeh she goes everyday now since being on this milk before she was only going every other days but i'm finding there nowhere near as bad and doesnt have foul smelling wind anymore so something must be going right. yeh it does get me down as i have a 5 year old so school runs is a nightmare inbetween mopping up sick and changeing clothes we've had this since she was 6 weeks old but its become alot worse over time. shes not drinking as much either she'll only have 4 oz 4/5 times a day but is also on 2 meals i just wondered if this milk is more filling than a normal stage 2 formula???
my peadiatrian has requested and IGE blood test is this the right one for what i need as i know theres a few??

Pancakeflipper · 04/05/2010 16:37

Oh I so identify with the school runs!!! We stand there away from the others with our kitchen roll, carrier bags ( sometimes the buckets from the sandpit) with a funny smell of pretend milk drifting across the playground.

I feel for my ES - he suffers too cos' we have to cancel so many social arrangements he's now not getting invited.

linz23 · 04/05/2010 17:04

hahaha yep because that nutramigen smells fowl i can really notice it.. i literally go through a changeing bag full of bibs muslim cloths and spare clothes i stay in most of the time now beacuse its just too much hastle and now shes on food its just more stuff i have to take with me.. its great to be able to tlk to other people that are going through the same thing.. once we get her results in couple weeks i suppose as she hasnt got them till tuesday i can go from there if her results show positive to allergy i will mention the other formula neocate u suggested

i forgot to ask (pancake flipper) how much was ur little one on as my daughter is only haveing 4oz bottles 4/5 times a day and is still pukeing i just wondered if this milk was more filling???

OP posts:
Pancakeflipper · 04/05/2010 17:35

P.S meant to say I think it is pretty filling - noticed a slight drop in the food intake of my YS.

linz23 · 04/05/2010 17:36

ok lovely thanku for that

My boy had only recently gone onto it ( he is 18 months) and we use one sachet of Neocate Advanced a day ( 2 bottles of 7oz milk). He didn't have it as younger baby - we just sat in vomit finding our social circle getting smaller and smaller.

We've had a tough ride with Dr's to get referred to the hospital. Good on you for making greater progress with tests etc.

linz23 · 04/05/2010 18:01

oh ok i presume the nutrimigan didnt work for u then either. Shes haveing an IGE bloodt test dont is tht going to be accurate enough??
thnx i kept on going back they told me she had reflux and she'd grow out of it tht is what they were treating her for eventually but i stopped all tht as i knew it wasnt and there was another cause, docs just fobbed us off really it took 5 and half months of going down there to get the referral and i will go bk and tell them they were completeley wrong i just said to the peadiatrician this cant go on anymore somethings got to be done and we told her the symptoms etc thts when she said shes allergic to dairy and gave us the blood forms and refferal to dietician etc. not looking forward to the bloods as shes got to have numbing cream on both backs of hands and arms but i have to put plasters and bandages on aswell to make sure the cream dont leak

hiya babybarrister my daughter already tried soya and was sick on tht and made her constipated too so i told the peadiatrician tht and she has prescribed nutramigan 2 formula.. i guessed she might be so am just giveing her veggies and fruit purres tht i cook and blend as i know there dairy and soya free we also give her dairy free organic purees in the packets (ellas kitchen) for when i'm out and about. thnx for ur advice

We never tried the nutramigan - was given Neocate a few ago after a long time of my boy being ill ( it isn't viral!!!!!)

Dunno why we got put that onto that straight away, cos' I know little about these formulas...

You can buy some Organix chicken and rice ready made meals that are dairy free - they are from 7 months and will be handy if out and about or on hols. I love cooking but I have a pack for just incase.

I find Waitrose very good for basic biscuits that have no milk in them and the Pure spreads have worked ok in the cakes I have made ( topped with the dairy free buttons you can get at supermarkets!). I think Supercook do dark chocolate drops that can be used in baking.

Also check out Vegan websites for recipes - been brilliant and made me feel that food can be fun even without dairy.

linz23 · 05/05/2010 11:15

i'm still at the learning process of all these different formulas about. shes just 6 months so will definately keep the chicken and rice in mind i must say i'm not a great cook but have attempted it with her and just blend sweet potatoes parsnip apples pears etc i'm still at basic level for cooking but try my best haha and she doesnt complain. thnx for the biscuits tip and dairy free buttons its good to know tht she wont be completeley without treats i have noticed tht some things in the baby section claims to be organic but still has milk powder or milk in it have u noticed tht?

I have.... We were at friends the other week and the kids were having a picnic outside and my friend did some ovenchips - and guess what ! Powdered milk on them... Though some other brands are ok cos' I checked in the supermarket the other day!

I am finding the main difficulty being puddings. I have taken to making fruit crumbles with the non-dairy spread and freezing batches of them.

trixymalixy · 05/05/2010 18:50

Hi Linz,

My DS is dairy allergic, he came up in hives after having Nutramigen so was prescribed neocate instead.

linz23 · 06/05/2010 11:00

(pancake flipper) really?? i know its in some things u'd never think off but cant believe its in oven chips aswell. because my lil one is only 6 months i give her the dairy free deserts or blended apple or pear.
(trixymalixy) my daughter hasnt had any skin rashes even tho she is allergic she gets bad sickness and diareah tho but it is starting to calm down now she has been on this new milk for a week now i'll give it another couple weeks and if no improvement will sugest this neocate
