What to do if you suspect dc has an allergy

I suspect my dd 1.7 is allergic to apple juice, and possibly apples. She had a nasty skin problem on her face, dr diagnosed impetigo and prescribed cream, which didn't work. Went back and got different cream also had no effect.

The patch on her face would clear up sometimes then flare up again, seemingly with no warning.

Then my dh noticed that it flared up really badly about half an hour after she had a drink of apple juice. Have stopped the juice for 4 days now and her face has pretty much cleared up completely.

Is it worth taking her to the dr to confirm this? Are they likely to give her allergy tests to see if she's allergic to anything else?

Don't want to take her if the dr will just confirm she gas an allergy and then look at me like a paranoid parent.

I have no experience of allergies at all, so don't really know what to do in this situation.

Had the same with tomato ketchup with my DS now 5. Noticed it at 3 when he first had it and just stopped giving it to him. He had same reaction as your DD and a parent I know advised that some children have sensitivity to acidic products.

After year reintroduced small amounts with no real issues just slight redness of cheeks. Then one night he had ketchup with pizza and looked like he had been attacked with acid, face swelled etc. Gave him antihistimine and saw gp following day. Has just had blood tests for allergy to tamato, ketchup and peanuts and waiting results.

I'm not a dr but I am a parent and would advise you to seek advice from the GP if you are concerned. Perhaps theres one you have a good rapport with? GP will make decision whether they feel DD needs an allergy test.

Best of luck and keep us updated.

Oh and I'm sure apples are part of deadly nightshade family as are tomatoes etc.

thanks for sticking up for me on the trifle thread. Was in danger of becoming vilified as evil pudding-giving mum!

The apple peel is dd2, think I'll get appt next week to try and rule out any other allergies.

Good luck - my ds was referred to a peadriatric consultant who then asked lots of questions about his reaction, allergies in family, excema, asthma history etc. She then referred him for allergy testing via a blood test. Basically they took blood and the suspected allergen is added to the blood to test for a reaction. She added peanuts to this which alarmed me but please don't let it as apparently most will add peanuts to an allergy test just to rule it out.

No probs with trifle thing I agree if you don't set boundaries you might just as well become a zoo keeper!!!!
