We were at the hospital at 10.30am for the milk challenge. Its done in stages.

stage one is dabbing a bit of milk on the skin/bottom lip, wait for 30mins, if no reaction proceed to stage 2.

stage 2 is dabbing a small amount on the tongue. wait for 30mins, if no reaction then go to stage3

stage 3 is ingesting a small amount of milk, wait for 30mins then go to stage 4 if no reaction.

stage 4 is swallow a larger amount and wait for 2 hours. If no reaction then i guess you are home free.

Soph got to stage 1 they dabbed a small amount of milk on her chin. literally a fingertip. Within 10mins, a rash had appeared. So she hasnt passed the challenge. They dosed her on antihistimes and we had to wait for 2hours to check she was ok.

We have to wait a year to repeat this challenge.

However we are booked in for 3 weeks time for an egg challenge as well. Peanut challenge is still a long way off in the future.

So for now, its carry on avoiding milk, and carry medication and epipen still at all times

hi i had this problem with my sons who are now 21 and 15 when i had my children it was just trial and error but my eldest i was told stop breast feeding put on soya milk with my youngest i cut it out of diet and cheese and he was fine then used soya as well . but now you have far more choice but as baby gets older try health shops they are very helpful with extra they can have but be ware look for hidden milk product in things always read labels it is in tinned spaghetti all sorts but good luck it is really easy once you get used to it

thank you cheryl.

sophie has been milk free for a year now, and this challenge was done because her last RAST tests can back negative for milk, and in the normal range for egg as well.

Misdee - she still may improve as she gets older. I have a friend with a child who developed an egg allergy as a baby. She is now 6 and can tolerate food with egg in it - i'm not sure if she can have an actual egg - but things are much better as she's got older.

i hope so Northern, its so disheartening when the bloods indicated no problem, and just a drop sets off a reaction.

hopefully the egg one will go better. but i know most dont outgrow their allergies at this age, and usually between the age of 3-5.

That was certainly my friend's experience.

Look - at least the bloods were good - that is a sign of improvement isn't it - didn't it show up in them last time?

I hope you've treated yourself to some chocolate or something - must have been a hard day for you even without the disappointment. Toddlers and hospitals go so well together don't they

misdee · 23/04/2010 00:01

they have halved apparently, and the numbers were low to start with but she reacts strongly on contact alone.

am worried about the egg one, as has never had egg, as didnt move on from fruits and veg till the RAST results were in, and avoided it from the start.

If she's never had it then she's unlikely to react really dangerously the first time -isn't that the theory? So it may be scary and frustrating and disappointing but it will be safe for her. I hope you get a good result - if not this year then next.

Sorry to hear Dd4 failed the challenge

Ds1 Rast tests and skin prick tests have never shown a major reaction to allergens but Ds has had 4 anaphylactic reactions

He is 5 and showing no signs of growing out of his allergies.

misdee · 24/04/2010 21:16

thank you

am feeling a bit better about it now, i was just hoping that she would get through it easily. her numbers were only 0.25 for the results, which seems very low, but obviosuly enough to set off a reaction for dd4.

So sorry - good luck!

Ah what a bummer Misdee. So sorry to hear this. I remember how happy you were with her rast test results.
