please help, I'm at my wits' end today, and left-hand typing too so apologies.

background: dd2 - 5 mths - is ebf and seems to be v sensitive to my diet. So far i've excluded dairy, soy, gluten, nuts, oats, egg.

problem: she had the sickness bug last week. Since then she's been really bothered with her tummy. no bloating, but all the signs of painful wind. waking at night where previously sleeping through. unsettled. she is also teething. I had sausage casserole on tues night and since then the symptoms have escalated. She was up for 5.5 hours last night writhing and screeching and hasn't settled at all today or napped except during feeds. I remember having problems after sausage casserole befor so phoned the butcher before we had it on tue to check there was no egg or dairy in the GF sausages, but they only put 'coeliac seasoning' in them. I'm expecting the next dirty nappy will have green bits in which is usual after episodes like this.

So, do any of your LO's hve problems with beans, and if so, how does it manifest isteslf?

Sounds like my DS (now 18 months) - he had the same symptoms you describe plus rather nasty eczema whenever I ate anything that disagreed with him. His problems with baked beans turned out to be tomato and onion related rather than actually the beans themselves, but it took a lot of detective work to find this out - and I know how stressful and distressing it can be when it seems like everything you eat upsets your baby.

I recommend keeping a food diary and making it very detailed (i.e. include the seasoning you put in the casserole and the flavour of any sweets you eat) - if you also write down any symptoms she has the next day, this helps you to go back and spot patterns if you need to.

Might be worth having a word with your doctor in case you need allergy tests in the future and/or some piriton in the house for when you eventually start to wean (I say this because my DS turned out to be quite seriously allergic to some of the things that had bothered him in my diet when bf) - but this could be something your LO grows out of quite naturally.

You are doing so well to be ebf and taking such care with your diet. Be proud. Hope you both have a better night tonight.

I've just discovered that the GF sausages I got from the butcher are actually full of soy, so that explains a lot.

I'm not sure about allergy testing since most of her symptoms are gastric rather than atopic.

beans are also well known for making you pass wind - do you remember the rhyme 'beans, beans are good for the heart the more you eat the more you fart'

I don't know if it helps at all, but my dd1 had a v odd reaction to beans, ( and yes it was the beans and not the sauce) They would cause her to become hyperactive and very aggressive, the 1st time she had them it lasted about 6 hours. GP recommended I wait 6 mnths and try again, disaster, it lasted 3 days.

I tried her again 4 years later and she was fine.

Don't know if that is helpful to you at all, hope your lo, is feeling better soon

flip, that is odd. I know DD1 was always more of a handful and hyperactive after dairy. So interesting. I just wish there was more research into all of this.

My ds1 is allergic to beans. The only way we found out was that he vomited every time we gave him anything with beans in (this used to be a lot, as being a veggie, beans used to be a staple in this house - dp and I also both love chilli). The last time he had beans his lips swelled.

Most baked beans have gluten in them....only Heinz and Baxters are GF

hobnob57 · 27/04/2010 11:05

I noticed that ilove, so we've been using heinz. I suppose there's only one way to be sure and that is to eat beans without sauages but that is one risk I'm not willing to take until I'm getting more than 4 hours' sleep a night!
