dd (2) had a suspected allergic reaction today

Hi,
My dd had a strange suspected allergic reaction today when we had lunch at a friend's house. She just picked at the pasta bake my friend made, then came and sat with me, where she ate a couple of doritos that was in a bowl on the big table. She also ate a tiny piece of homemade bread. Didn't eat much more at all really. Then about half an hour later she got really distressed and was pulling at her mouth and rubbing her eyes. Her lip swelled up and was red and her eyes were red and rolled back a couple of times. We called an ambulance as weren't sure what to do and were very worried.
At the hospital, the doctor put it down to an allergic reaction, and said this was not to be considered as a specific allergy at this stage. They said it was not anaphalactic (sp?) reaction as was not instant to eating, and her airways were not affected.
I obviously won't be letting her eat Doritos in future ....
Does this sound like a typical allergic reaction to you? I have no experience in this and don't know whether I need to be extra cautious with foods from now on (other than the crisps!), or should not worry about it too much.
thanks for any similar experiences shared

Sounds like it. Might want to get some Piriton to carry with you just in case. And monitor what she eats when it happens.

thanks specialmagiclady, I will get some tomorrow.
I'll mention it to her nursery too to be on the safe side.

Yes it sounds like an allergic reaction and you need to know exactly what was in the food they ate.

Allergic reactions are not always immediate (although the vast majority of anaphylactic reactions are they can be delayed). It is possible to be allergic only to the digested food. Sometimes foods that don't cause a reaction immediately will cause one if the person exercises (or a child is very active). And in young children a reaction that begins immediately may not become sufficiently serious to be noticed straight way.

You need a referral to someone able to do tests because other reactions could be worse. Meanwhile carry antihistamine everywhere and if her lip swells/ eyes roll back/she is floppy go to a&e. You were quite right to call an ambulance as the reaction you describe had the potential to become serious very quickly.

thanks PixieOnaLeaf and Tatt, we didn't get referred at all. I will go and see GP asap to discuss it and ask to be referred.
I got some piriton today and will notify the nursery about it too.
all food today was fine - tescos squares, raisins, philly sandwich, breadstick, houmous, pasta with turkey bolognese and yogurts.
