When we picked up ds from nursery on Wed, we were told his face looked swollen (which indeed it was) and that they had checked the rest of his body and it was fine etc. By the time we got home it was quite bad and obvious he was having a reaction to something so we gave him some piriton and it calmed down. The next night the same thing happened and I have just had a phone call from nursery to say that they had given him piriton just now as his lips were swollen and his throat was irritating him. He has a peanut allergy (not very severe but enough to have an epipen) and they are very careful about this in nursery and don't have nuts on the premises. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? He only had rice crispies and raisins to eat this morning so I don't think it is the food.

Could it be latex from gloves they use to change nappies etc?

I hadn't even thought of that. Could be - will ask them if they have changed their supplier when I pick him up.

what time of day was this happening?

what food was offered all at the time?
(and as its easter , are the staff eating anything as well in the room?)

has egg been ruled out as a allergen for your child?

do you provide the food for your child?

if not, who checks the labels for 'may contain' etc?

you probably know that if his throat is "irritating" him then its serious. What brand of rice krispies do they use? It's possible that it's a "may contain nuts" box and that box actually does contain some nut traces. Some packets of raisins have nut warnings. I'd be looking for potential nut contamination first and replacing any box of food that had been used.

A child at nursery may have picked up contamination from other children. It's not very likely but perhaps a letter to other parents saying this has happened and asking if any child had eaten nuts for breakfast to let you know so that you needn't go on looking for another cause?

Any chance that they play with empty boxes from nutty products? Or use playdough made with nut oil (although oil isn't usually a problem).
