What is everyone doing in advance of the hayfever season for their dcs or themselves (in terms of steroid inhalers/eyedrops etc. etc.).....

just wondering what everyone is doing in advance

I am concerned about my hayfever this year as it was so bad last year and it seems to be getting worse and worse. I know a few people on here had bad hayfever last year.

I had skin prick testing the other day to see if anything else was contributing and making things worse and my reaction to grass pollen was so severe that my arm swelled up, went all solid and I can only move it properly 2 days later grrr.

I have got a prescription for steroid nose sprays and some phenergan for when it's bad at night but not sure much can be done for the throat swelling.

It's that time again, is it?

DP suffers terribly too

Luckily the dds seem to have escaped it

Nothing over-the-counter seems to touch it for him

foxinsocks · 30/03/2010 19:54

yes, round the corner isn't it. I am pleased it is Spring and lighter evenings and hopefully getting warmer (well not quite yet it seems ) but not for what comes with it!

Glad your dds have escaped it.

I am trying to persuade dh (who really suffers with his eyes) to get the steroid eye drops (think you can get them over the counter) because I think they work quite well.

Dp has sort of given up on anything working

But I will push him to try new remedies. For him it's his eyes and nose, they are like running taps

He's had to leave work early before because of it - not because he's 'ill' but because it's so impractical to be working in that state!

Hope you get through it ok

Normally May time is the bad period, isn't it?

foxinsocks · 30/03/2010 20:02

yes I think grass pollen is generally June but often seems to start mid May

so basically planning a medical defence from around mid April should help I hope!

poor dh, sounds horrid. I think runny and itching eyes one of the worst symptoms tbh. Makes your head feel all sore when that happens!

Am going to use opticrom eye drops and planning to start eating lots of local honey. Also vaseline under nose - nice!

Wasn't last year supposed to be particularly bad for hayfever? Hopefully this one won't be so bad.

bridewolf · 30/03/2010 21:11

we have got tree pollen allergy, have outgrown the hay fever.

my son has to take antihistamine everyday, well he should, but being the teen he is, its difficult to pin him down and force past his defiant mouth.

but, when the tree pollen season started rearing its ugly head, son started taking his tablets from march. to get that build up, and as son remembers last year, when he would get facial swellings in the morning and tingling mouth, he is being ok about it.

we are now getting those nasel sprays sorted, as they make a huge difference.

and have ordered the eye drops, today, as i can see him rubbing his eyes more often.

give it another week and his skin will dry out, and need another big talk on skin care, which will fall on deaf ears............

I take nasonex too.

I find it impossible to take antihistamines during the day because the non drowsy ones don't seem to work and the drowsy ones mean I can't work! But I might re try the non drowsy ones this year if it gets bad.

Yes, I'm hoping last year was just a blip and it's not too bad this year.

lol bridewolf, what can you do!

and ps, I took none of this seriously when I was that age. In fact, I didn't take health seriously I don't think. Only now as an old codger am I paying more attention to it

I was pg last hayfever season and wasn't allowed my usual antihistamines.
Instead I had to suffer I bought an electrical (stick it up your nose) contraption from Lloyd's pharmacy, which was utterly useless.
Also had an allergy test at the hospital to check for other allergies. I was tested positive for Birch oral and Grass
pollen.

This year I have my beloved Flixonase back. So no more itchy eyes, nose, throat and no more nosebleeds
