So, DS (2) saw the Gastro consultant a few weeks ago, and of course after the appointment, it all went haywire with DS vomiting frequently. GP thinks it (probably) food related, but absolutely no idea what it could be. (DS is dairy intolerant)

We're back at Children's Hospital for more tests, but here's what DS had today, yet was sick:

Shredded wheat/Oat milk
hummus/oat cakes/carrots
Neocate Advance
Apple juice

Is it homemade hummus or shop bought? - most of them have sesame seed oil in which makes my dd ill.

tatt · 22/03/2010 19:34

there are some nasty bugs around at the moment that cause vomiting so it may not be food related. Would be inclined to keep him on things like porridge, chicken or lamb and potatoes or equally bland food for a while.

It was store bought hummus. Maybe it was reaction to tahini?

Am sort of hoping it's a virus, if that doesn't sound too weird, and not another food intolerance.

oats?

UnseenAcademicalMum · 27/03/2010 00:08

Hi ilove .

Your ds sounds similar to mine. Atm he is 22 months and vomiting up to 5-6 times per day (not a virus, going on too long). He has Neocate Active and increasingly little amounts of food every day.

A gastroenterologist friend says it could be coelic disease and even though we have had a blood test, he sayes that is not conclusive and we need an endoscope.

Could that be the same for you? Much of the food listed has gluten. Plus, in our case, ds1 and i have red-ish hair and it is apparently more of a problem in people with celtic roots.

academic am sort of hoping it was a delayed reaction to soya. Spoke at length with dietician who asked me in detail what DS had to eat over past few days. The idea is that he is hyper sensitive to soya and has taken a few days to get out of his system.

Since he hasn't had any, he has suddenly developed an appetite! Unbelievable.

How much Neocate is your DS on a day? When he gets ill, it's the only thing he will have, so it's such a relief to have a back up. And Neocate Nutra which he seems to like

Ds2 is on between 12-18 oz of Neocate per day, but the dietician has told us to concentrate it up so we are now using it at 25% greater concentration than normal because he wasn't eating and what he does eat is frequently coming back up.

The soya allergy is an interesting one, as this is linked to dairy allergy. DS2 did test negative to soya previously, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to rule it out as a possibility for causing his reactions.

What's the Neocate Nutra like? Any good?

nighbynight · 27/03/2010 18:00

Sesame, wheat and apples (salicylates) are all common allergens. But it could also be a bug. It is horribly complicated, good luck with finding the source.

Re: soya. As DS is dairy intolerant/allergic, I was perhaps over compensating with soya and using it as an alternative. Soya margarine, soya desserts etc. It's incredible that it was in so many breads too.

Anyway since taking it out of his diet completely, he hasn't vomited at all, and is hungry.

Neocate Nutra. It's a food, so is in addition to Neocate Advance. Use about 4 scoops with water to make up a paste that I add to things like fruit, especially bananas.

Academic I could send you a tin if you want to see if you (DS) like it?

Thanks for the offer, Ilove. We are seeing the paediatrician tomorrow, so I'll try asking for a prescription then. If he says no, I might take you up on that offer.

We actually also use a fair amount of soya (soya sour cream, soya yoghurts, soya desserts, soya cream cheese, dairy free white chocolate buttons - which are about the only high calorie food I've found that he loves ). I make our own bread mostly, so it's less of an issue in that.

I'm thinking though to put ds2 on a diet free from the major allergens for a few days and see if he improves. If he does, I can maybe then start introducing different foods slowly and see if we can eliminate the culprits that way.

How much Advance does your ds drink in a day btw?

ilovemydogandmrobama · 30/03/2010 22:20

DS is on 600 ml of Neocate a day, but try and incorporate Neocate Nutra with fruit, pancakes etc. I know what you mean about high calorie foods. DS loved soya chocolate desserts and Toffutti cream cheese and ice cream. But he's been so much better since being off soya.

Hope it went OK with your paediatrican.

Am off to make your coconut milk ice cream
