Aveeno - help please?

I've heard lots of good things about Aveeno so want to give it a go on my youngest (eczema all over but not too bad, just itchy). Just looked at Boots website and not sure what I should be buying. None of them seem to be 'baby' products, or maybe just not marketed as such. Can anyone do a link to what they use? Many thanks.

we use aveeno cream - it's about £6 for a 100ml tube but ask your GP as we get ours on prescription! Absorbs well and isn't at all greasy - useful for adult use too!

forgot to say, ds had a referral to a dermatology nurse consultant (she's a bit of a guru!) when he was a baby and we tried a few creams in the counselling room. Chose aveeno purely due to it's feel etc and she said most emollients are basically the same, it's about choosing something you like and therefore will use regularly. It needs to be applied at least daily.

There are different sorts of Aveeno cream, I bought Aveeno Derm Baby only to find it was a nappy cream.

You need Aveeno Cream with naturally active ingredients. I bought it in Sainsbury's.

belgo · 20/03/2010 17:33

I use this one

TheHouseofMirth · 20/03/2010 17:39

You might be able to get your GP to prescribe it. I buy it for my own eczema but my next door neighbour got it on prescription for her burns after radiotherapy.

I use one which is just called Aveeno Cream. It's not on the website. The Main body of the packaging is beige and Aveen o Cream is printed white on a olive green rectangle.

TheHouseofMirth · 20/03/2010 17:40

That's it!

There's no reason not to use the ordinary Aveeno cream on a baby as far as I know. Some of the Aveeno range aren't for under 2s but the standard cream is fine.

Also good for itchiness is ordinary porridge oats tied in a muslin or old pair of tights/sock and used in the bath. Squeeze it over skin or into the water.

Fab. Thanks guys.

yes ask GP, DH gets it on prescription. It does amazing things to my dishpan hands that nothing else touches

makeitadouble · 21/03/2010 18:22

Does anyone use a bodywash/bath cream too?

OP posts:
EldonAve · 21/03/2010 18:25

we use the bath/shower oil plus the cream and the bath sachets

bran · 21/03/2010 22:36

We use the bath oil and sachets, but mostly I just pop DS into a plain bath and let him splash about. I never use soap on him except when he's washing his hands.

If you have an itchy child have you already tried changing your washing powder? I use Filetti (or Ecover if I can't get it) for DS. It makes a big difference to him. He recently came out in an itchy rash in the exact shape of his school polo shirt which makes me think that one of his shirts must have gone in our wash (with normal non-bio powder) by mistake.

snice · 21/03/2010 22:38

Aveeno is usually on sale at Costco if you know anyone with a card

bran · 22/03/2010 11:55

I forgot to say that if you have a very young child then using oats in a muslin might be better than Aveeno bath oil to start with. The bath oil makes the bath and the child quite slippery, so if you're lifting a small child out of the bath and he wriggles it can be hard to keep a grip.

Lulumaam · 22/03/2010 11:56

Aveeno is on offer at boots at the moment, 1/3 off...

Flossy14 · 14/07/2010 13:36

The baby care range is available in the UK, thank goodness. It has been great for my daughters skin, her eczema is looking miles better. Look at www.soft-skin.co.uk

stigofthedump · 14/07/2010 21:50

Theres a big range available in our local health food/natural health care shop, creams, lotions etc, reasonable prices and lovely stuff. Its changed my life.

BettyButterknife · 14/07/2010 22:01

It's brilliant - we get the cream on prescription for DS, and I sometimes buy the bath oil/cream and alternate that with plain baths.

Interesting someone earlier up the thread said Ecover washing powder is better for their DC's eczema - definitely made my DS's worse. We use Fairy non-bio liquid now with no problems.

I tried it all, and ended up with Vanicream (US). It works fan-tas-tic, 13$ for a giganctic tub. Was a tip from Baby's Allergist.
