travelling with baby eczema

Our eight month old daughter is battling eczema. It was at its worst when she was three and four months old; treatment with steroid cream prescribed by Great Ormond Street has helped tremendously. Her skin is no longer broken; her nights are better but she still scratches quite badly when tired, hungry, stressed or hot. We?d like to go on holiday ? maybe to the coast in Greece or Italy - before I go back to work in July but am worried about travelling with baby eczema. Some people have said the sea helps clear the skin; others say heat is a real problem. Any advice or things I should think about if we do decide to go?

Lots of light cotton clothing and your medication regulalry for baby. That is how we have done it with ours and she is 2 now. Eczema is still very much a part of her life but you still manage to adapt..

My DS1 has battled since he was very small - now 3.10, we have just come back from Florida.

I spoke to our eczema nurse before we went and she told me to make sure he was drinking alot, especially on the plane, we found the sun did him the world of good but he did flare up on the flight quite badly.

We were also given piriton to help keep the itching at bay, he has it before he goes to bed when he is bad na dit does seem to help.

Its one of those things though, each child is different and you won't know until you go.

You might already have found one that works but chose the sun cream carefully, DS was really bad last Summer on alot of the Child special ones.

Hope this helps, and you have a good holiday if you do decide to go.

Both my children suffered terribly with head to toe eczema until approx 6 years old and then it just seemed to get better. We did go abroad and I found that they had some good days and some very bad days. Swimming seemed to make it worse especially in the pools (chlorine I think),heat made it worse plus tiredness and different foods. Finding a suitable suncream was a nightmare so before you go it may be a good idea to try a few creams out.I had to find one that wasnt drying at all and stayed quite greasy. Also the treatment creams I had from the hospital made the kids sweat more, I ended up using Aveeno cream which worked wonders. I dont think you should let eczema stop you from going abroad just be very prepared.
