mild hives reaction to Aptamil; advice please!

DD has been exclusively BF up til now, and I've just started weaning (25 weeks). I mixed baby rice with aptamil and she had mild hives and some blotchy redness around her mouth on both occasions. Baby rice mixed with EBM is fine! I'm a bit concerned as I've never got on with expressing, I managed to get out enough for a few spoons of baby rice but its not a long term solution for me. Has anyone else had this with aptamil? Would another brand of formula be any better to use? Any advice would be much appreciated!

i'd have thought it more likely to be a reaction to cow's milk than to a specific formula tbh!

I have heard of other people who say there child can tolerate one brand of formula but not another but when this happened with my ds1 it was a mild cows milk allergy, so anything with cows milk in it was no good.

I would suggest you stop/don't start giving your DD anything with cows milk in it (milk, yogurts, margarine etc) and go to your GP. They should refer you for allergy testing - if the allergy is confirmed then there are prescription formula suitable for children with cows milk allergy.

Alternatively, your GP may tell you to wait a few months with cows milk and try again. Some people are happy with this approach, if you aren't then be firm and insist on testing.

Incidentally, ds1 outgrew his milk allergy by age 3. It is quite a common allergy and most children do outgrow it within a couple of years, sometimes even less.

i think most people who have found their children can't tolerate a particular formula don't have such an obvious allergic reaction iyswim? it's more gut problems- runny poo, green poo, constipation, wind etc etc

this sounds much more like an allergic reaction and as formulas are pretty similar overall it seems unlikely that a child would be allergic to a single ingredient in a formula

does that make sense??

anyway, op,m if you don't want to express just use water.
or, skip the manky baby rice altogether and just give finger food., at 25 weeks it's fine to offer your baby proper food and let her eat what she wants!

If it is a cows milk allergy (which does sound likely) you will be prescribed a hypoallergic formula (neocate/pepti etc) which you can use instead of regular formula, for when you need/want to stop breastfeeding.

I would suggest getting to your GP asap, who will hopefully refer you to a specialist for testing.

CMP allergies are frequently outgrown although quite often sufferers will also be allergic to other foods so I would suggest trying new foods, especially common culprits (egg, fish, soya etc) with care

Your story is virtually identical to the mine. Hives, red rash after trying Aptimil etc. Sounds like a cows milk allergy or dairy allergy. I used distilled water with the baby rice at first and then went on pretty quick to puree'd fruit.

I tried goats milk but he's also allergic to that.

Also like thisis comments, try finger food.

My DS still has dairy allergy at 2.5 yrs but we now use soya milk as a substitute. You need to be careful with milk protein also. Firstly se your doc who'll refer you to allergy specialist.

Thanks so much for your all your replies, I really appreciate your time. I've booked an appointment with the GP and will be doing fruit, veg and finger food only in the meantime! Thanks again.
