DD is now 12months old. At around 9 months she had poached egg and came out in a mild rash, couldn't be sure what had caused it. 2 wks later she had scrambled egg and the rash was angrier and more red, but cleared up after a day. Since then I have tried to keep her off egg by dr's instructions. But at her birthday party everyone insisted she have some of her birthday cake, which had egg in it, and she had no reaction. DD had her 1yr vaccince last wk and HV said to challenge her with a boiled/poached/scrambled egg again to see what happens, to help decide what to do for her next vaccine, MMR I think, at 15months. It's cultured in egg and if she has a reaction to egg again, she will need to have this vaccine in the hospital as a precation. I'm scared to giv her "real" egg on its own, don't really trust my HV... WWYD?

The egg allergy to MMR is not as much of an issue now they think, we always had to ask re allergy to eggs but not now, although I still do. its not uncommon to be able to eat cakes etc and not eggs in their cooked format ( ie poached scrambled) my nephew is the same and has a bad reaction with cooked eggs.

I would not do the egg challenge thing your HV said personally, and hope that she told you to keep piriton in the house in case`of allergy related episodes

hope i have been of some help, if you are nervous you could ask to have it done at the hospital but if you have it done at the surgery then make sure you wait for the 15mins after the inj.

I don't think the MMR is cultured in egg any more.

DD2 had a very nasty reaction to scrambled egg when she was about 8 months. She had eaten egg in biscuit/cake before that and had no reaction. It is often the case that they only react to lightly cooked egg.

We were advised to do a challenge, but not until DD was about 5 or 6. She was probably about 8 before I decided to do it and she does now love eggs!

Check with your GP, I think the HV is a bit out of date with her advice. DD did have the MMR in hospital. It was an outpatient appointment and we just had to hang around for about and hour afterwards to make sure she was OK.

I would ignore your health visitor entirely and speak to your GP.

agree- don't challenge at home. Ask gp to refer you for proper tests. Dd2 had mmr in hospital. It was a long day but she was fine and will be able to have the booster at the gp.

She still tests positive to egg yolk allergy but has gone to negative for the white. We are going to go into hospital for an egg challenge which will be egg cooked into cake/biscuits first then scrambled egg at a later date.

Your HV is very out of date. MMR no longer contains egg HOWEVER the swine flu vaccine does. If you DD gets called for this you must tell them and they will order a different 2 jab vaccine instead.

DS is allergic to egg. We found out when he was about 9 months. He is now 4 and we are considering getting him tested as I am not convinced he is still allergic to it. It is the most common food allergy to grow out of. He has always been able to tolerate egg in cake/biscuits/even pancakes but eggy egg ie. boiled fried poached scrambled brings him out in head to foot urticaria. (nettle rash)

We are going to challenge him with egg but at the very least it will be in a GP surgery and at best on a paed ward in the local hospital. I think your HV's advice to challenge him at home is shocking advice and I wouldn't be happy following it. My DH is a Dr and he is not happy trialling DS at home.

PinkMM, it might be an idea to tactfully point HV in direction of this NHS info on food allergy diagnosis, which includes the statement: "Never attempt to carry out a challenge test at home because there is a small risk that you will have an anaphylactic reaction."
www.nhs.uk/Conditions/food-allergy/Pages/diagnosis.aspx

DIY diagnosis definitely not a great idea, she should know better.
